Transforming a Consulting Business with Faster & Advanced Simulations

Watch our recently recorded live SOLIDWORKS Simulation Champions Series webinar to discover how companies like yours are managing design challenges by combining SOLIDWORKS and cloud-based simulation tools.

Many thanks to everyone who joined the live webinar for the SOLIDWORKS® Cloud Simulation Champions Series.

Hosted by Practical Engineering Solutions (PES) Chief Operating Officer Tyler Cook, the webinar analyzes a 40′×100′ cargo ship stern-mounted ramp design project. The extremely heavy ramp is divided into three main weldments. The PES customer needed the project completed ASAP. (Cook also refers to other illustrative projects.)

Design Challenges

Founded in 2010, PES is a Louisiana-based design and engineering consultancy known for its rigorous standards and fast project turnarounds. PES faced a great challenge in late 2021 in designing a 350,000-pound cargo ship ramp for loading 40-foot containers. The project’s notable complexity exceeded the capabilities of their existing engineering tools, and with a tight six-week deadline, the company needed a solution quickly.

PES added 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation to level up their capabilities and get the job done.

Advanced Tools Required

With the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation utilizing Abaqus technology, PES was able to bypass the time and investment needed for additional computing hardware. Therefore, the company could run the complex, large-scale simulation studies in the cloud, which freed up local resources for other work. 3DEXPERIENCE tools integrate seamlessly with SOLIDWORKS to offer solutions for complex, large-scale simulations, such as non-linear and fatigue analyses.

The adoption of 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation enabled PES to not only deliver the stern-ramp project on time, but also to tackle more complex simulations in the process. Subsequent projects included a 30,000-pound scissor lift, a stern-mounted A-frame, and a coil tubing injector design for a major oil and gas client. The cloud-based solution provided the necessary computational power and efficiency and enabled PES to maintain its reputation for quick and reliable results.

Growing Beyond Expectations

By leveraging their new and powerful cloud-based simulation tools, PES engaged in projects previously beyond their typical scope. This strategic move has generated significant additional revenue. The company won over $400,000 in new business avenues without the need for additional hardware investments.
