Living Collaboration, Living 3DEXPERIENCE with Politecnico di Torino
Giacomo De Carli is our 3DEXPERIENCE Works Marketing Specialist for Dassault Systemes in Padova, Italy. He tells the story of Prof. Stefano Tornincasa, Politechnico di Torino and the innovated changes implemented with collaboration amongst his students and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
What is the main task for one of the most known University in Italy and in Europe? The answer is very simple: prepare the students for their next steps in the best work environment possible. This means that teachers, universities/colleges and students themselves need to work not only by studying the technical part of their degree but also by starting to use “tools” that they deserve.
Thanks to our 10 years old collaboration with Politecnico di Torino and tp Prof. Stefano Tornincasa – full professor at Politecnico in the Department of Management and Production Engineering –we have launched this year a program where the student should start to work with the next-generation of designing tools. What does it mean? Easy to answer: involve 3DEXPERIENCE in their projects!
The reference course treats of functional mechanical modelling, one of the most important courses because it provides all the skills for the next-generation of engineers, useful to develop products. In this case, all the students start to work with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform in order to learn all the technology used by the engineers to innovate, design and industrialize.
Thanks to this course, all the students not only started to model and deepen their knowledge of modelling but they also went through the simulation of virtual products operation. Thanks to the implementation of 3DEXPERIENCE, Politecnico di Torino has gained several benefits: indeed they tried first to increase and deepen their knowledge of the tools but also the so called PLM systems and in general all those tools enabling integration of business processes configuring the business workflow all the way from design up to spare parts.
As a benefit, with 3DEXPERIENCE they wanted to educate and inspire students about the collaboration on global scale. For this reason they have defined 10 to 12 product development projects where students worked in a group and were able to meet them remotely in virtual teams. Meanwhile they try to encourage their design ability and their skills for modelling.
So these students experienced the same challenges that industrial designers as well as product engineers face today in the modern industry. The most beautiful feedback is the description about 3DEXPERIENCE that these students give back to us when we interviewed them.
If we could do a quick recap, the students used the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to model a project and collaborate internally with their colleagues. One of the most important key success factors for them it’s not only the several modelling apps offered by the platform, such xShape or xDesign, but also app that make easy the communication through the group thanks by the possibility to exchange comments, images and messages.
The students has defined the platform like an innovative, compact and functional tool, with a Cloud-based approach who enable users to work remotely at home or on the road with a more flexible and more independently way. The possibility to have all your data in one single dashboard with all the tools that you need in there allow the people to avoid errors, rework and non-value added works.
Students also demonstrated that the transparency and the simple way in which information is organized, provides us with a clear and direct path to the goal of the team. For that reason, they are 100% sure that 3DEXPERIENCE will be an essential tool for their next career.
Sixteen years ago, I was fortunate to meet Professor Stefano Tornincasa I received an autographed copy of his book, “Disegno Technico Industriale.” He knew the value of teaching design skills in 3D with SOLIDWORKS. Again he leads engineering education by teaching next generation design tools with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Thank you Giacomo for sharing this story with the SOLIDWORKS community and being a 3DEXPERIENCE Champion.
Design well. Marie
