Youngest Self-Taught Student in Turkey Achieves CSWA

Egerman Ertem Turkey CSWA

When Bertrand Sicot visited Istanbul, he met Egemen Ertem, then 13 years old.  Egemen has a real passion for SOLIDWORKS, design and 3D Printing.

I got to interview this young designer on his path to passing the CSWA exam.

Marie: What age did you start learning SOLIDWORKS?

Egemen: I started to use other 3d designing programs when I was 12 but I started using SolidWorks when was 13. I passed CSWA when I was 13 and now I am 14.

Marie: Did you learn SOLIDWORKS at school?

Egemen: No, it is not at school.

Marie: Who is your mentor?

Egemen:  Amazingly I don’t have any mentor. I read an article about 3d printers in “Bilim Teknik” magazine. I decided to have a 3d printer and I learned that I must design something by using a CAD program to print. I downloaded a basic CAD program’s trial. After the trial time ended I started to use another CAD/CAM program. After that I started using SOLIDWORKS. What I can say is SOLIDWORKS is the best of all. I didn’t know some advanced features in SOLIDWORKS before I had a 5 day course in Tekyaz.

Marie: What is your favorite feature in SOLIDWORKS?

Egemen: My favorite features in SOLIDWORKS are assembling and surface designing. I usually design simple parts if I will be the only customer because I want to use it as earlier as possible, so I don’t often use surface designing but I use assembling a lot.

Marie: What drove you to become certified?

Egemen: I wanted to have a certificate because it shows how good are you. There are some other children who passed CSWA but not much. I knew I can pass CSWA. I passed CSWA with 220 score.

Marie: What do you want to do after high school?

Egemen: I am at Prep in Üsküdar Amerikan Academy and I have lots of plans to do during high school years too. I am working on organizing a club at school that I will teach SOLIDWORKS. After high school I want to study at MIT. I want to study on robots and mechanics.

Marie: What do you do to have fun?

Egemen: I design something on SOLIDWORKS to have fun. If I don’t have anything to design, I usually create “a blank in a blank”.  Now I am working on few projects at the same time. I did one of my homework by using my 3d printer(MakerBot 5th Generation Replicator) and SOLIDWORKS.

Egemen, congratulations on achieving CSWA certification and thank you for sharing with the  SOLIDWORKS community!

This month, My SolidWorks is providing SOLIDWORKS users a “golden ticket” to learning the content on the CSWA exam.  More information can be found here.  Marie
