SolidWorks Sustainability in Engineering Design Education – Teaching Green
Last week I was fortunate to present on SolidWorks Sustainability at the American Society of Engineering Education – Engineering Design Graphics Division Mid Year Conference at Penn State Erie. SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress is a new, free, application that allows you to determine Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on a part. So how do you teach green? How do you empower your students to learn how their decisions will impact the environment. From inputs, such as material selection, manufacturing process, where manufactured in the world, and where a product is used, SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress provides information on carbon footprint, energy consumed, air acidification and water eurtrophication. Once the student calculates the baseline, similar materials can be compared based on material properites such as density and tensile strength. Final LCA reports are delivered in Word format. My complete presentation, step-by-step example for the classroom and information to obtain SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress is below. You must have SolidWorks 2009 SP2 or greater.
