Scale Factor for Surface Area and Volume

Scalecylinder This lesson is an exploration in the relationship between scale factor and surface area and volume in solids.  In the first part students create three different areas to investigate scale factor.  These sketches will then be used in the second part to generate solids. Students make use of the Section properties and Mass properties to quickly find the surface areas and volumes of the similar solids. Once students discover how scale factor affects surface area and volume, they should be able to calculate new values based upon the scale factor.  Contributed by Lindy Wine, Atlanta, Georgia.
