Learning Areas and Volumes

Cargotruck  This lesson shows the importance of knowing an objects size in volume and area are practical things we use all the time.  This lesson plan relates to actual circumstances.  Students will receive mathematical practice in solving simple types of problems in everyday life.  Knowing how many cubic feet of items there are to be moved can more efficiently be used to rent the right size of truck. This lesson provides reinforcement to the memorization of the simple formulas with areas and volumes and shows students how math relates to the real world.  Students will learn how to draw simple 3 dimensional shapes of known sizes that can help demonstrate the truck requirements. Students will also see what size of truck and the estimated gas mileage as given on the rent-a-truck’s web site.  Contributed by Richard Williams, Nevada.
