CADrina 2024 -Tribute to Science and Engineering in Estonia

Today’s story in technical education is given to us by our SOLIDWORKS reseller partner,  PLM Group,  Gerli Parve, Marketing Specialist and Martin Johansson, Early Engagement Team Leader.

The small Estonian town of Kadrina recently hosted the 14th iteration of CADrina, its flagship IT and technology festival of the local high school. Designed to promote engineering and technical education, CADrina has evolved from a local drafting competition to an expansive festival featuring robotics, science workshops, and sports events.

This year’s event, held on April 12th, was marked by an intense competition where the outcomes were uncertain until the final announcements.

The CADrina 2024 competition stood out for its close scores—only one point separated the top three teams, reflecting the high skill level of the participants. Kristi Aimla-Maripuu, the event’s project manager, noted, “The competition was thrilling, with fluctuating scores that kept the results unpredictable till the end.”

Teams were made up of students from the local high schools as well as graduates who have moved forward to studying in university, but still wanted to showcase their skills. METAMORPHIC, a team from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), won the top prize, narrowly outscoring the second and third place teams, Tudengivormel (Student Formula) and TalTech x Kadrina, respectively. The contest featured a challenging task: drafting a monument to science, inspired by artificial intelligence, blending traditional drafting with futuristic themes.

The competition was overseen by Valdar Tammin, a respected figure with extensive experience, ensuring a fair judging process. The patron of the event was Aigar Vaigu, a physics and an officially acclaimed science promoter. In 2023, CADrina was also officially named the promoter of science, which is the reason for the choice of subject matter of creating an ode to science this year.

The event was sponsored among others also by PLM Group, the local reseller of CAD solutions such as SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE. As the company’s promise is to be an innovation partner to our customers, they’re also committed to encouraging young engineers and CAD designers in their journey from the very grass root level onwards. Together with the Dassault Systemes, SOLIDWORKS Early Engagement team, they provided goodie bags, information leaflets and financial support to the event.

As CADrina looks forward to its 15th anniversary in 2025, it continues to be a vital event for nurturing future generations of engineers and promoting technological innovation in Estonia.

Congratulations students!.  Thank you Gerli , Martin and PLM Group for sharing with the SOLIDWORKS Community,

Design well.  Marie
