Robot Student Teams Go Back to School with SOLIDWORKS

In many parts of the world it is the start of a new school year or new term.  More than ever, student robot competitions are growing at all levels.  So if you are part of a middle school, high school, or collegiate team, in a afterschool or club program, SOLIDWORKS EDU is here for you.

You may have seen the SOLIDWORKS EDU team at AUVSI RoboNation events, RoboSub and RoboBoat.  We love robots – even in the water!  Robot Student Teams can apply for SOLIDWORKS Sponsorship at www.solidworks.com/studentsponsorship.

Free SOLIDWORKS Product Offers for Student Teams

Here you can apply for SOLIDWORKS Cloud Apps (100% Browser Based) for MAC, Tablet and PC, SOLIDWORKS Desktop (SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD for PC), or SOLIDWORKS Desktop + Cloud Services, providing free cloud storage for your robot models and documents.

We also offer teams SOLIDWORKS Desktop (SOLIDWORKS 3DCAD for PC) and 3DEXPERIENCE Engineer. 3DEXPERIENCE Engineer features advanced simulation with the Abaqus solver.

FIRST Robotics

Some of the most popular Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) organizations include FIRST (R) Robotics including FRC, FTC, FLL and FIRST Global competitions. SOLIDWORKS is used in the FRC game manual and we have developed a kit of part for both SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD and SOLIDWORKS xDesign (cloud) format. We have a special website for all FIRST teams at www.solidworks.com/FIRST.

Watch the video above to see how teams use SOLIDWORKS tools for their robots.

Any student can create a 3DEXPERIENCE ID and join our 3DEXPERIENCE Student Community! Our Student Community allows you to ask questions to our engineering team, promote your events, and show off your robot.

At SOLIDWORKS, the EDU team supports student events to develop the best engineers and designer for our commercial customers. Our SOLIDWORKS Value Added Resellers (VAR) and Partners are also there to support students. I got to speak with Frank Cavalier, education advocate and engineer for our VAR, CADimensions. Frank was part of the FRC team, X-CATs in Rochester, NY in high school. In 1998, the FIRST World Championship was held at Walt Disney World.  Frank had a great industry mentor and teacher that introduced him to engineering and CAD.

Later Frank would go on to major in engineering at RIT in NY and work for Polaroid in MA. Lucky for us, he returned to Rochester, NY and now works for CADimensions supporting teachers and students including P-Tech Technical Vocational Schools and the RIT Formula Electric Team.
