Building Competitive Teams with SOLIDWORKS Education Edition

One of the things I love about working for SOLIDWORKS is our Education Program (I’m a teacher’s kid, so education is something near and dear to my heart). Spring is a busy time for the SOLIDWORKS Education Team. They release the latest version of the SOLIDWORKS Education Edition – everything your students need to learn 3D design and sharpen their skills to get the job of their dreams – and its student competition time.

In the past month alone, SOLIDWORKS Education provided software to 73 student teams and participated in three events:

  • FIRST Robotics World Championships – where custom-built robots compete by throwing balls over a truss, catching balls, and putting as many balls in goals as possible. My very own hometown Walpole Robo-Rebels were division finalists.
  • Baja SAE – where engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain.
  • SAE Aero Design  – where teams strive to achieve autonomous flight.

Resolution_plainHow do student teams use SOLIDWORKS in engineering competitions? One of our newer case studies on the Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) team answers that question. The CUER team is a group of 60 students at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom who build and race solar-powered vehicles. Since its founding in 2007, CUER has grown to become the top UK developer of solar-powered vehicle technologies and a leading contender to win the 2013 World Solar Challenge. Fulfilling CUER’s mission and developing competitive solar cars required an easy-to-use, yet robust, 3D design platform.
