DIY Design at Cedarville University

I first learned about Jay Kinsinger, professor of engineering at Cedarville University, from the school's VAR, 3D Vision. They told me about how in addition to pushing design to its limits using the tools at hand with his students' projects, he also designs steel-frame bikes on his own time.

BIKEPICSo when Jay began planning a 60-day cycling trip through Europe with his family, he immediately thought of designing lightweight wooden bikes for the journey. The frames could be folded up and be checked in luggage, used sustainable resources and were the perfect solution for such a long trip.

There are engineers like Jay everywhere—people who make a living on their skills, creating innovative and effective products, while retaining their passion for design and using it in their personal lives. In recent years we’ve seen design as a hobby grow significantly, and many of our customers just can’t get enough at the office; they design at home on their own time and their own dime.

We’d love to know what you’re designing at home! Trebuchets? Bikes? Snowshoes? Tell us other ways you use SolidWorks in the comments.
