Celebrating Creativity and Fibonacci Day with SOLIDWORKS Champions
The Fibonacci sequence is a timeless symbol of beauty, balance, and harmony found in nature and art. Once you see it, you’ll spot its influence everywhere!
We challenged our SOLIDWORKS Champions to a fun design challenge. The Champs were invited to channel their passion for SOLIDWORKS and design magic into a contest that blended mathematics and creativity. And what better day to culminate and celebrate the winner – on this year’s Fibonacci Day: November 23, 2024 – or 1123!
The Mission of the Challenge:
- Participants were tasked with creating a 3D design inspired by Fibonacci’s sequence and rendering it a stunning 2D image.
- Champions were told to open up their SOLIDWORKS toolbox, including xDesign and xShape and to leverage 3DEXCITE’s 3DRendering role, xStudio, to animate and showcase their creativity.
- Outside-of-the-box thinking: whether in form, function or aesthetic, Fibonacci’s influence was their playground.
- Once the creation was in place, the Champions showcased their entries in the SOLIDWORKS User Forum community at swym.3ds.com.
Why Fibonacci?
Anyone who knows the basics of SOLIDWORKS can design a “gray blob.” Knowing our SOLIDWORKS Champions, AKA: the best-of-the-best, most powerful SOLIDWORKS users in the world – we decided to ask for more from them than just a boring old shape. That’s why we landed on Fibonacci.
The Fibonacci sequence – a unique pattern where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones – 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc – is more than a mathematical pattern—it’s the foundation of nature’s design, from seashells to galaxies. For centuries, artists, architects and designers have drawn inspiration from its natural harmony. We knew our Champions would rise to the challenge, creating something far beyond the ordinary.
The Champions’ Response
By November 22, the challenge closing date, 11 Champions had joined, proving that creativity knows no bounds. Every participant brought their unique vision to the challenge, showcasing the diversity of talent within the SOLIDWORKS community.
We just love our Champions and we know they are a competitive bunch. But at the end of the day, this challenge wasn’t just about competition – it was a celebration of innovation, passion and the joy of creating. This quote from our winner captures the spirit of the competition:
“Bringing the magic of the Fibonacci sequence to life in SOLIDWORKS was both inspiring and fun.”
Speaking as a jury panel member, I had a lot of fun reviewing the entries but the decision process was a big “challenge” given that all the designs submitted were super cool, very well done and impressive! Every challenge has a winner, and despite this aspect of the “challenge,” after much deliberation and various rounds of voting, the jury landed on a winner.
Nadir Oktay Kucukaltun, a SOLIDWORKS Champion, rose to the challenge with his exceptional clock design incorporating the Fibonacci sequence. His blend of creativity, functionality, and the integration of Virtual+Real elements resulted in an outstanding entry that ultimately secured victory.
For winning the contest, in addition to the supreme bragging rights, Nadir’s design will be showcased at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2025 in Houston, complete with a featured poster and a functioning clock in The HIVE. He also wins a high-resolution framed copy of his design and a 3DEXCITE Product Communicator Associate certification.
Congratulations to Nadir and all our participants for their outstanding contributions!
What will you create next?
