Learn from the Past. Inspire our Future.

As we look to 2021, I know students will learn and be inspired from great educators and engineers to solve problems for our future.  Civil Engineer, Gustave Eiffel created the global icon that continues to inspire us.

What if Mr. Eiffel used the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to collaborate with his team of engineers?  Engineering students today utilize tools like SOLIDWORKS to learn from the past and inspire our future.

One young student, Shashikumar Narayana extensively researched the original drawings for his Master’s Thesis under the direction of Professor Stefano Tornincasa, Polytechnico Di Torino, Italy.

From Eiffel’s original engineering drawings, Shashikumar, created sketches, parts, and assemblies to replicate the 3D Model of the Eiffel Tower using sound design intent.

The planes represent relevant cross sections. Initial sweeps define the cross sections. The 3D models and analysis used symmetry.

I have been fortunate to walk by the Eiffel Tower many times and look up to view the names of LaPlace, Lagrange, Legendre, Navier, all resulting in my foundation of applied mechanics.  Amphere (Amp), Poisson, Coulomb, Fourier, and others continue to inspire us to design and make.

We all look forward to more student and educator stories in 2021.  Thank you Alessandro Tornincasa for sharing this one.

Happy New Year.  Be well.  Marie
