Concept Before CAD Episode 2: Designing a Better Whiteboard

Concept Before CAD is all about what designers and engineers do before they begin detailed CAD design.  We’ve been learning from our customers about the tasks they perform and the tools they use for conceptual design.  It turns out there are some challenges common to that process.  Here’s what you told us:

  • About 31% of design time is spent in the conceptual phase—BEFORE detailed design is done in SOLIDWORKS.
  • Many stakeholders may need to provide input; however, collaboration is difficult.
  • Traditional CAD and PDM tools are inefficient and restrictive for rapidly evolving concepts.

With all this in mind, we’re excited to show you our take on a conceptual design scenario using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and SOLIDWORKS Mechanical Conceptual.  In this episode, Brian Zias and Brad Williamson head down two different paths to come up with ideas for a moveable whiteboard mount for the office.  Watch how easily they can try out multiple concepts and how they connect using the social tools built into Mechanical Conceptual to review and discuss their designs.
