What makes a good idea for the SOLIDWORKS World 2019 Top Ten?

Any idea you might have to enhance SOLIDWORKS products can be a good submission to the SOLIDWORKS World 2019 Top Ten list. What makes a good idea submission for the SOLIDWORKS World 2019 Top Ten list?

To create an idea, go to the SOLIDWORKS World 2019 Top Ten, click on Action in the upper right, and choose Idea.

Idea Title

The title should be both brief and comprehensive, giving enough detail for anyone to quickly identify the topic.

For example, “Make selection more like photo editing software” does not have enough information.

  • What selection capabilities should be included?
  • Is this a request about filtering or window selection or something else?

A better title would be “Add polygonal lasso selection tool”. In this case, you are asking for a specific capability or tool.

Description

The description should provide more detail as to why a user would need this enhancement. You may also wish to include images or attach videos as examples of how the tool might function or where the enhancement would be beneficial.

Adding an image

Attaching a Video

In the example “Add polygonal lasso selection tool”, the description should include a paragraph about this tool, such as how you wish to use it (often called “use case”), the frequency of use.

Other topics to discuss are:

  • Do you want to use this selection tool on sketches in parts, annotations on drawings or both?
  • Do you want it to work like another application, or do you have something else in mind?

Additional guidance

Avoid making one post with too many ideas, submit these ideas as separate posts. Allowing everyone voting to consider each idea individually. There is no limit on how many ideas you can submit

For example, if you wish to include more window selection tools, do not create the idea “Add magnetic lasso, polygonal lasso, and magic wand selection tools”.

Instead, create one idea for each, as in, “Add polygonal lasso selection tool”, “Add magnetic lasso selection tool”, and “Add magic wand selection tool”.

This allows everyone to consider the merits and use cases for each tool separately. For example, perhaps polygonal lasso selection is popular, but magic wand is not. Voters may not vote for an idea because they do not want magic wand, even though they do want polygonal lasso.

Categories

Select the appropriate categories for the idea found at the bottom of the submission page.  Please make sure to only select applicable categories to each idea you submit.

Comments

Comment from other users can help refine the idea. Commenters may have alternative use cases that increase the importance of the idea. Or, perhaps functionality already exists in SOLIDWORKS, and you’ll need a more specific description to explain the added value. Comments also help ideas get noticed and provide more attention when voting starts.

We welcome all constructive input about every idea!

Have fun!

Most of all, the SOLIDWORKS World Top Ten is for you! So please enjoy, submit, comment, and vote often!
