Roborisen Reduces Prototyping by 30 Percent with 3DEXPERIENCE Works

Dr. Sangbin Yim developed the single-module PingPong open platform cube-shaped robot, and later founded Roborisen Co. Ltd. in 2017. Each robot cube has its own controller, accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, origin sensor, stepper motor, servo motor interface, and battery, so the PingPong robotic system enables students (or adults looking for a fun and innovative toy) to learn by creating, assembling, building, and controlling hundreds of single-device types of robots. Students can use various types of links that connect cubes to other cubes to mimic the motions of humans and animals. While students are having great fun, educators can easily support this effective approach to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) instruction.

Fast Growth Leads to Design Challenges and Late Delivery

Roborisen used Autodesk® Fusion 360® design software to develop robotic components, links, and mechanisms until October 2021. As its number of robot models and accessory parts continued to increase exponentially, the company began having issues that led to design errors and delivery delays. Roborisen found the perfect remedy in SOLIDWORKS® Premium software in conjunction with 3DEXPERIENCE® Works solutions for collaboration and data management on the cloud.

Affordable Solution for a Startup

SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions enable Roborisen designers to easily collaborate and manage product design data without the significant investments in IT staffing or hardware. With 3DEXPERIENCE Works cloud data management solutions in addition to SOLIDWORKS software, the company was able to resolve many quality and data management challenges.

Shorter Design Cycles, Fewer Errors, Fewer Prototypes

3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions enabled Roborisen to dramatically improve and leverage its collaboration capabilities and use automated data management to shorten product development cycles by 20 percent. The move to 3DEXPERIENCE also helped Roborisen eliminate its revision control issues. Fewer errors overall translated to fewer design errors and 30 percent fewer rounds of prototyping, resulting in cost and time savings as well as quality improvements. In addition, effective revision management tools in the cloud helped improve communication internally and with outsourced manufacturers that helped Roborisen reduce its manufacturing-defect costs by about 20 percent.

Success in Meeting the Needs of the Educational Market

As students learn by designing and controlling creative PingPong robots, educators demand more and more capabilities and products from Roborisen, so the company must design and release new products as quickly as possible. The productivity gains that Roborisen has realized since moving to SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions contribute to accelerating product development throughput, which is critically important for helping the company meet its goals in serving the global education market.
