Get the Facts on SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Works

Since the mid-1990s, SOLIDWORKS® has solicited your feedback on every new release of its software. We have developed many enhancements to enable you to work smarter by focusing on high-value tasks while letting the software handle more repetitive, routine, and time-consuming tasks.

These enhancements add up to an optimized design environment that empowers you to innovate while producing high-performing designs.

When the worldwide pandemic came along it forced many of us to reconsider where we work and which tools are most efficient.

Over the past 18 months many SOLIDWORKS customers have connected to the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE® platform for easy access to advanced design, data management, and manufacturing tools. A platform connection also enables collaboration with more people more quickly—colleagues, customers, and vendors—regardless of location.

Let’s look at a couple of customers who have benefited from adopting the 3DEXPERIENCE platform alongside of SOLIDWORKS.

InFocus Energy Services, Inc.Predicting Product Failure

InFocus Energy Services, Inc. is primarily an R&D-based company for downhole products used in the oil and gas industry; it licenses its technology and products to strategic partners. In the unpredictable environments of downhole drilling, one of InFocus’ primary business challenges is reducing its reliance on slow and expensive physical testing.

“SOLIDWORKS® is the core of our engineering group,” says Founder/Director Allan Pearson. “It’s the basis for everything we do: modeling, simulation, flow analysis, and renderings.” When InFocus needed more simulation power, it turned to 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation tools.

InFocus utilized 3DEXPERIENCE Works Simulation on the bearing section of the company’s RE|FLEX Premium HP/HT drilling motor. The motor’s bearing section is a proprietary design developed to convert extreme loading parameters, including torque of over 30,000 foot-pounds, into efficient drilling action.

3DEXPERIENCE Works predicted the failure—with precise correlation to actual test results—of the drive system’s initial concept design that used traditional ball bearings, which enabled the company to develop a better, more innovative design.

InFocus Energy saved tens of thousands of dollars in testing costs, eliminated unnecessary mold iterations, and cut months of time and extra labor from the product development process by leveraging the power of both SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions.

Uvoji® – Getting Products to Market Faster

Uvoji® is a water treatment company conducting R&D on the application of short-wave ultraviolet light (UV-C) radiation generated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as an innovative disinfection method. UV-C has long been a useful disinfection technology because it works quickly, does not require chemicals, and has a very high bactericidal and virucidal efficacy.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the company to physically lock down. It was also forced to continue developing products remotely. Uvoji was already leveraging SOLIDWORKS® 3D design, structural simulation, and flow simulation solutions for product development. In addition, the company was a beta tester of the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions before the pandemic.

“The cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform provided the data management and collaboration capabilities we needed,” says CEO/Technical Director Thomas Zunino. Uvoji chose to add 3DEXPERIENCE Works applications to its SOLIDWORKS installation because they provided an affordable collaboration solution.

Using cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions with SOLIDWORKS, Uvoji quickly developed its new UV-C LED surface disinfection unit. The company launched the product in June 2020 amid the pandemic when it would be most beneficial to its customers.

Despite working remotely, Uvoji developed its product fast—resulting in sales of 1,000 units in just one year—thanks to the secure, automated data management capabilities within the 3DEXPERIENCE Works portfolio.

In addition to leveraging the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Uvoji tapped into its SOLIDWORKS desktop flow and structural simulation solutions to save additional time and money by reducing prototyping needs.

“SOLIDWORKS flow and structural simulation tools were critically important to meeting our aggressive three-month development cycle,” Zunino points out. “In the long term, the combination of SOLIDWORKS tools and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is helping us work toward the day when everything related to product development will be managed securely in the cloud.”
