The model does not get loaded but the drawing views are intact, so there is no loss of detail.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to open a drawing in \u201cDetailing mode\u201d? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Drawings can be opened in Detailing mode from the \u201cFile\u201d menu and navigating to \u201cOpen\u201d and then when selecting the drawing, \u201cDetailing\u201d mode is available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-71.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27952 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-71.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-71.png 623w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-71-300x73.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-71-615x150.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After selecting open, SOLIDWORKS shows what operations can be done in Detailing mode:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-58.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27954\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-58.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-58.png 532w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-58-223x300.png 223w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-58-458x615.png 458w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When a drawing is opened in detailing mode, you can see the note \u201cdetailing mode\u201d appear next to the drawing and sheet name like below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-56.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27955\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-56.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-56.png 444w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-56-300x27.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How is \u201cDetailing\u201d mode different from \u201cDetached drawings\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Detailing mode is similar to detached drawings, but different because a drawing does not need to be first saved in detailing mode like detached drawing.<\/li>\n<li>Detailing mode has the advantage that when any referenced components have changed, and while opening the drawing, a dialog box will pop up which warns user that the drawing needs to be updated and user can continue opening in detailing mode or resolve all the model data and update the drawing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-51.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27957\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-51.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-51.png 478w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-51-300x164.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 478px) 100vw, 478px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the capabilities which we can do in Detailing mode?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some of the capabilities of working on drawings with &#8220;Detailing&#8221; mode are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Notes, including notes with leaders<\/li>\n<li>Weld callouts<\/li>\n<li>Linear and circular note patterns<\/li>\n<li>Geometric tolerances<\/li>\n<li>Surface finish symbols<\/li>\n<li>Datum feature symbols<\/li>\n<li>Datum target symbols<\/li>\n<li>Revision symbols<\/li>\n<li>Revision clouds<\/li>\n<li>Radial and linear dimensions, including use of the Smart Dimension tool<\/li>\n<li>Locations labels<\/li>\n<li>Balloons<\/li>\n<li>Ordinate dimensions<\/li>\n<li>Magnetic lines<\/li>\n<li>Angular running dimensions<\/li>\n<li>Change the position, rotation, and labels of drawing views.<\/li>\n<li>Copy or cut drawing views and paste them onto the same or other sheets within the same drawing.<\/li>\n<li>Within annotations, add links to the displayed values of dimensions and other linkable annotations.<\/li>\n<li>Insert sketch blocks.<\/li>\n<li>Add general and revision tables.<\/li>\n<li>Save the file as a PDF\/DXF file, or print as a PDF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>With SOLIDWORKS 2021, some major enhancements in detailing mode are:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>We can create Break, crop and Detail views (It is necessary to first save the drawing in SOLIDWORKS 2021)<\/li>\n<li>Add hole callouts: In Detailing Mode, we can add and edit hole callouts for holes that use Hole Wizard, Advanced Hole, Hole, Extruded Cut, Swept Cut, and Revolved Cut features.<\/li>\n<li>Editing Existing Dimensions and Annotations in Detailing Mode: In Detailing Mode, for existing dimensions and annotations created in resolved mode, we can edit additional characteristics. It is possible to do the following:\n<ul>\n<li>Edit dimension tolerance values<\/li>\n<li>Edit dimension characteristics such as line type and arrow type<\/li>\n<li>Add and remove dimensions in sets of chain and baseline dimensions<\/li>\n<li>Edit annotation note characteristics and content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is a short video showing some of the functionalities in Detailing mode in SOLIDWORKS:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1140px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-27949-1\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Whats-New-in-SOLIDWORKS-2020-Detailing-Mode_HD.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Whats-New-in-SOLIDWORKS-2020-Detailing-Mode_HD.mp4\">https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Whats-New-in-SOLIDWORKS-2020-Detailing-Mode_HD.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h1><strong>Terminology changes in SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><em>By Julien Boissat and Jay Seaglar<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021 introduces a broad range of changes in terminology for contacts and component interaction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-72.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27960\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-72.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-72.png 623w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-72-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-72-615x516.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The goal of these changes is to improve clarity and better align the terminology in SOLIDWORKS Simulation with industry standards.<\/p>\n<p>The implementation of the terminology changes will take place gradually over the course of the Beta phase of SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021 and may benefit from adjustments when necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: inherit; font-size: 30px;\">1. Contact ==&gt; Interaction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the benefits of the new terminology is to reserve the term <strong>Contact<\/strong> (if you\u2019re confused, don\u2019t worry \u2013 read on). The new general term for how bodies behave with each other is <strong>Interaction<\/strong>. So out goes the expression <strong>Bonded contact<\/strong> (an oxymoron), replaced with the clearer <strong>Bonded interaction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This change allows getting rid of the former <strong>No Penetration<\/strong> type of Interaction, and simply calling it <strong>Contact<\/strong>. Similarly, <strong>Free<\/strong> is the new name for <strong>Allow Penetration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-52.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27961\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-52.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"688\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-52.png 688w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-52-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-52-615x293.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 688px) 100vw, 688px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A downstream effect of these changes is the new term <strong>Interaction Viewer<\/strong> to replace <strong>Contact Visualization Plot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Compatible \/ Incompatible bonding<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The concept of <strong>Compatible<\/strong> and <strong>Incompatible<\/strong> bonding has been well established in SOLIDWORKS Simulation. It appeared in version 2006, which introduced Global bonding with incompatible mesh for assemblies. Although the terms <strong>Compatible<\/strong> and <strong>Incompatible<\/strong> were effective in distinguishing between the methods, the words did not describe well the underlying technology. Eventually, these terms remained unique to SOLIDWORKS Simulation, and the rest of the industry did not adopt them.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the trend in the industry has favored <strong>Incompatible<\/strong> bonding over <strong>Compatible<\/strong>. Reasons for this trend include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New technological developments in constraint equations made <strong>Incompatible<\/strong> bonding more accurate.<\/li>\n<li>Meshing coincident bodies to enforce common nodes between touching boundaries (<strong>Compatible<\/strong> bonding) is a common cause of mesh failure<\/li>\n<li>Meshing bodies independently (<strong>Incompatible<\/strong> bonding) produces better quality elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After 13 years of having <strong>Compatible bonding<\/strong> as the default, version 2020 already made the switch to having <strong>Incompatible bonding<\/strong> as the default.<\/p>\n<p>Version 2021 completes the transformation started in version 2020. SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021 seamlessly achieves <strong>Bonded interactions<\/strong> after meshing bodies independently using a <strong>Bonding formulation<\/strong> of either <strong>Surface to surface<\/strong> or <strong>Node to surface<\/strong> constraint equations.<\/p>\n<p>Users can still opt for the alternative and choose to <strong>boundaries<\/strong> when meshing using the <strong>Standard<\/strong> or <strong>Curvature Based<\/strong> meshers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Gap (Clearance) ==&gt; Contact Offset<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Gap (Clearance)<\/strong> option takes on the new name <strong>Contact Offset<\/strong> in <strong>Contact Interactions<\/strong>. This terminology change combines two benefits:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It is consistent with the terminology in place in <strong>SIMULIA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is coherent with the name of the new <strong>Contact Stabilization<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Always ignore clearance<\/strong> takes the new name <strong>Unlimited gap distance<\/strong>. With this option, the program enforces the <strong>Contact offset<\/strong> irrespective of the gap between the selected entities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ignore clearance if gap is less than<\/strong> is shortened to <strong>If gap is less than<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-47.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27962\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-47.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-47.png 622w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-47-300x71.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-47-615x145.png 615w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 707px) 100vw, 707px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Other miscellaneous changes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here is a list of some other changes.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Show advanced options for contact set definitions (no penetration and shrink fit only)<\/strong> option is ON by default. Therefore, the option to show these settings is now obsolete and has been removed from<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Simplified<\/strong> and <strong>More Accurate<\/strong> bonding formulations take more explicit names, respectively .
