{"id":22629,"date":"2018-12-27T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/tech\/?p=22629"},"modified":"2018-12-24T13:13:16","modified_gmt":"2018-12-24T18:13:16","slug":"sketching-in-xdesign-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/tech\/2018\/12\/sketching-in-xdesign-part-3.html","title":{"rendered":"Sketching in xDesign &#8211; Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sketch Entity Relations in xDesign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here, we have a sketch in xDesign that doesn\u2019t have any dimensions added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sketch is intended to create a mount for a vertical rod, which would be revolved around the left edge to create the 3D geometry. Some of these sketch entities have relations that were added as the sketch was created, but we\u2019ll want to use some additional relations to clean things up and make sure that we maintain design intent.<\/p>\n<p>First, we want to make sure all of the vertical and horizontal lines are set. Notice that when we click the line on the left, the \u201cVertical\u201d relation icon appears next to the line. Similarly, the horizontal line shows the \u201cHorizontal\u201d relation icon when we click on it. We want the shorter line segment here to be vertical.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whenever you want to add a relation to sketch entities, you first want to select all the sketch entities on screen, which brings up a context \u201ctoolbar\u201d with the available relations that can be applied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For this one, we\u2019ll select \u201cVertical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And for this line here, we\u2019ll select \u201cHorizontal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that you can see the sketch constraints existing in the sketch simply by clicking on a sketch element. So, if we click on this line, the icon appears on screen, letting us know which constraint type has been applied.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If needed, this constraint can be deleted either by selecting it graphically and pressing delete or by clearing it in the context toolbar.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk7.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next relation that we want to add is to make the top corner of the thin rectangle coincident with the top corner of the outer sketch profile. This relation can be chosen once the sketch segments are selected. To choose multiple sketch segments, hold the \u201cControl\u201d key, click on both corner points, and choose the \u201cCoincident\u201d relation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This snaps the corners of the rectangle into place and makes them overlapping, no matter the size.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, we want to make the bottom edge of the thin rectangle colinear with this horizontal line.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll hold the \u201cControl\u201d key and select both of them, and then choose the \u201cColinear\u201d option in the context menu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk11.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These lines will now remain colinear with one another, no matter where they\u2019re positioned.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk12.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The vertical rod mount will be created using a \u201cRevolve\u201d feature, and the thin rectangle will create the cutout where the rod fits into place. The design intent of this part is to make sure the cutout is half the diameter of the top face. This means that this point on the rectangle needs to be set as the midpoint along the top edge. To add this relation, we\u2019ll hold the \u201cControl\u201d key, select the point and the top edge, and click on the \u201cMidpoint\u201d relation icon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk12.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A key aspect of creating revolved features is making sure the surface geometry is smooth and doesn\u2019t have awkward edges. This means we need to make sure that this arc is tangent on both sides with the vertical and horizontal lines. We\u2019ll add the first \u201cTangent\u201d relation by selecting the arc and the vertical line, and choose \u201cTangent\u201d. We\u2019ll make sure to select the arc again, and the horizontal line, and select \u201cTangent\u201d once more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/sk13.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that we want to add a construction line that shows that these two lines are in fact colinear. I can easily draw a line connecting them, and then switch it to construction geometry by selecting the \u201cConstruction Line\u201d icon. This capability can be enabled for any segment in a sketch.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/a1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This sketch doesn\u2019t actually need any circles, but let\u2019s look at how to use the \u201cConcentric\u201d sketch relation. We\u2019ll quickly draw a circle. If needed, we could make the circle concentric with the arc by selecting them both by using the \u201cControl\u201d key and choosing the \u201cConcentric\u201d option in the context menu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/a2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t need this circle in this sketch, so we can simply click on it and press delete.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From here, we can add dimensions to fully define the sketch and make sure the geometry is set.
