Because the second hole could not be defined concentric. But now SOLIDWORKS 2018 introduces a brand new option: Misaligned Concentric Mates.<\/p>\n<p>You can align the mate to resolve exactly with either the first or second concentric mate and apply the offset to the concentric mate that is not aligned. Or you can apply the offset equally to both sets of mated holes. You can also specify an allowed tolerance, beyond which the misaligned mates over define the assembly and display an error.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>But I don\u2019t want any misaligned concentric mates!<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Let\u2019s first start with this objection. Because some companies would not accept the creation of misaligned mates. This could introduce serious errors in their manufacturing process. To help this group, it is possible to disable the creation of misaligned mates. To do this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>Tools &gt; Options &gt; System Options &gt; Assemblies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select or deselect <strong>Allow creation of misaligned mates<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Since this is a system option, it does not need to be saved in a template. You only need to ensure that every user within the organisation uses the right option.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Allowing misaligned mates<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Here is a workflow of how to apply misaligned mates:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Add a concentric mate between the first pair of holes.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19174\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1059\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16.png 1059w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16-768x499.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16-615x400.png 615w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/1-16-728x473.png 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1059px) 100vw, 1059px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Add a concentric mate between the second pair of holes.<\/li>\n<li>The following dialog box appears:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19175\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-15.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-15.png 425w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2-15-300x226.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Create this mate using misalignment options.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the Mate PropertyManager, the following settings appear Concentric:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19176\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-16.png 368w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/3-16-300x263.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select one of the following options under <strong>Misalignment<\/strong>:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19177\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-16.png 617w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-16-196x300.png 196w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/4-16-401x615.png 401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Maximum deviation can be used to define a maximum allowable deviation between the pair of holes. This value is defined in the Document Properties. By unselecting <strong>Use Document Property<\/strong>, you can define a custom value.<\/li>\n<li>After clicking <strong>OK<\/strong>, a Misaligned folder is created under the Mates folder.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19178\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-13.png 364w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/5-13-300x108.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/>\n<p>By right-clicking one of the misaligned mates, you can always remove the misalignment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h1><strong>Defining default settings for misaligned mates<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>You can define the default behaviour of misaligned mates in the document properties. To do this, go to <strong>Tools &gt; Options &gt; Document Properties &gt; Mates<\/strong>. Here you can define a default value for the <strong>maximum deviation<\/strong> allowed for misaligned holes. You can also select the <strong>default misalignment<\/strong> type.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Since it is not always necessary to have fully concentric holes to assemble items, SOLIDWORKS 2018 can provide a good solution with the new misaligned mate options. Luckily, for those who don\u2019t want any misalignment it is also possible to disable this setting.
