Not having listened to an album since I was young, I figured it was time to see what all the talk was about. Obviously this was not good news as the turntable needs to sit level when in use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16641 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified.png 800w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified-768x554.png 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified-615x444.png 615w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Old-Foot-Modified-728x525.png 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I searched the internet for replacements but could not find any that were suitable. \u00a0The next step was to make our own. \u00a0Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dvision.com\/products\/cad-design\/solidworks.html\">SOLIDWORKS<\/a>, my father reverse engineered\u00a0a new set of feet for the turntable. After a few design iterations, the new feet were a little more stout than the originals. Thanks to SOLIDWORKS SImulation, the new feet exhibited the mechanical properties we desired.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16631 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/ISO-Foot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/ISO-Foot.png 407w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/ISO-Foot-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We did not know the type of rubber used in the original foot. \u00a0This was not a problem as we used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dvision.com\/products\/simulation\/solidworks-simulation.html\">Simulation Premium<\/a>\u00a0and the Nonlinear material models to determine a relative stiffness. \u00a0By physically testing the original foot under a 2.5 lb. vertical load we measured a 0.1 in. displacement. Using Simulation and varying the material properties we found that a Shore Value of 70, gave a 0.095 in.corresponding vertical displacement. \u00a0Feeling confident in the design the next step was to test for vibrational characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Stress-Overlay.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Stress-Overlay.png 494w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Stress-Overlay-300x211.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The turntable operates at 33 1\/3, and 45 RPM. \u00a0This equates to 0.556, and 0.75 Hz respectively. \u00a0SOLIDWORKS Simulation Professional made it possible to test the resonant frequency of the design. \u00a0The analysis results predicted the lowest resonant frequency at 16.32 Hz. This is well above the induced vibration due to the turning motor and drive mechanism, and lower than the 20,000-20 Hz most receivers output.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Freq.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16630 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/4\/Freq.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"407\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next I turned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dvision.com\/products\/3d-printing\/stratasys-polyjet-printers.html\">Stratasys Polyjet<\/a> line of printers that delivered an amazing print. The Polyjet printed a 70 Shore value model that behaved just like we expected.
