Smart Drawing – View Location Labels in SOLIDWORKS
Written by: Gordon Pursel, Application Engineer at DASI Solutions
A great way to cross reference the sheet and zone location to and from the parent and child views is using Location Labels. This can especially helpful on multi-sheet drawing packages where Auxiliary, Detail, and Section Views need to be moved to another sheet to tidy up the drawing.
In this section view example below, the parent view on the left shows where the child view is located, Sheet 1 – Zone A1. Likewise, the child section view shows where the parent view is located, Sheet 1 – Zone A2. In the event the views are moved to another sheet or zone all Locations Labels will automatically be updated.
To display the Location Label Property Manager in a drawing with a detail, section, or auxiliary drawing view, click Insert > Annotations > Location Label.
Set the options in the Property Manager and click in the graphics area to place the location label as follows:
- In a section view, click the section cutting line or the child view.
- In a detail view, click the detail view circle or the child view.
- In an auxiliary view, click the reference edge or the child view.
The default location label is determined by the center of the view bounding box. However, if you prefer to cross reference the actual location label zone enable the document properties option Display zone of counterpart location label.
With the below Display zone of counterpart location label option enabled, the location label displays the zone of the counterpart location label of the associated parent or child view. In this section view example below, the parent view on the left shows where the child view location label is located, Sheet 1 – Zone A2. Likewise, the child section view shows where the parent view location label is located, Sheet 1 – Zone A2.
Location Labels are a great way to intelligently build Sheet + Zone cross references between parent and child views in SOLIDWORKS Drawings. This way you can be confident cross references are automatically updated to the correct sheet and zone when a drawing view needs to be moved.
