With the release of SOLIDWORKS 2015, users that have network licenses will be looking to upgrade their SolidNetwork License server. The information in this post has been put together to make the process as smooth as possible.
You’ll need to ensure before you start that the required installation files have already been acquired to reduce the time the license server is unavailable.
SolidNetwork License Server 2015 does not support installations on virtual servers and no longer supports Windows Server 2008. More information is available on this here.
It is a good idea to plan your upgrade to be at a time that will not affect your SOLIDWORKS users. If anyone is using SOLIDWORKS at the time the SolidNetwork license manager becomes unavailable they may be prompted after a short time to save their work before SOLIDWORKS closes down.
The first step will be to log onto the server that is providing the hosting of the older version of the SolidNetwork License server. As a local administrator it may also be necessary to disable the anti-virus software.
Start the SolidNetwork License manager and on the administration tab select the “Modify” button. Then from the options presented select the “Transfer a software license” option and then click “Next”.
Your serial numbers will then be displayed in the top dialog box. Click on the “Select all” button to the left of the serial numbers. Choose the appropriate method of license transfer and then ensure there is a valid email address in the contact information are. Click “Next”.
The SOLIDWORKS activation server will be contacted or a text file generated to be emailed to SOLIDWORKS. The license server will now be devoid of licenses. The email option should only be used if your server is not able to contact the activation server due to network restrictions. The text file must be emailed to SOLIDWORKS as soon as possible to ensure the activation server has been updated with the license status. The email address to use is given in the dialog box when generating the text file. You will then see a message telling you it is transferring your serial numbers and you should wait. Once done select “Finish” which will exit this dialog.
We are now ready to install the new version of the SolidNetwork license manager.
Run “Setup” from the downloaded file set you have for the installation of SOLIDWORKS 2015.
Select server products followed by SolidNetwork License manager. Upgrading the license manager is recommended, although uninstalling the older version first, before installing the new version is a option, but not necessary. Select “Next” to proceed.
Check the next dialog box as it will give details of the installation path and serial numbers to be used. The background downloader can be disabled at this stage. If you don’t disable it here, it can be done later in the process. Check the box accepting the license agreement, provided you agree with its contents. Installation will go no further if it is not accepted. To continue the installation select “Install Now”.
Select your preference on whether to join the SOLIDWORKS Customer Experience Program and then clilck “Finish”. Joining the program does not mean you will be contacted by SOLIDWORKS, but it does report information (log files) which can be used to improve the software and also populate the information on your CAD Admin Dashboard on the SOLIDWORKS Customer Portal.
That completes the upgrade of SolidNetwork License manager. Next you need to start the SolidNetwork license manager where you should be prompted to activate your licenses.
Ensure the information shown in the dialogue box is correct to your set up. Port numbers should be left at the default values unless there is another application using the same ones. Select “Next” to proceed to the next stage.
This next dialog box allows you to activate specific serial numbers, where you have more than one, or all of them together. “Select all” would be recommended, as this will ensure everything is activated for the SOLIDWORKS users to access. Check the email address is valid and the method of activation is correct before selecting “Next”. Again the email option should only be used if your server is not able to contact the activation server due to network restrictions. The text file will need to be emailed to the specified address for a response file to be generated. The response file is emailed back to you and will need to be read into the appropriate dialog. A box will show that it is activating your serial numbers.
Once the licenses have been activated you should see a dialog box informing you of the product, number of licenses, and activated version. The version we are expecting to see for SOLIDWORKS 2015 is 23.0. This will allow the use of earlier versions of SOLIDWORKS to be used so the client installations can be scheduled for later.
That completes the upgrade of your SolidNetwork License Server.
