Time ticks away. The fast pace of today’s design world is not for the faint of heart, nor for the slow of fingers. Today’s pace calls for fast eyes, and faster fingers. Today’s pace calls for The Fastest Hands in the East.
During your Check In, Change State, and Check out operations in Enterprise PDM, you may be dealing with large numbers of files, all of which need to be affected at once. For example, when you want to use “Update -> Values in Files” to propagate Folder variables down to all the files it contains (a story for another day), you will need to check out all files to be affected, push the variable values down from the folder to the files, then check them back in.
Here’s your lesson on how to speed up the process and become the Fastest Hands in the East.
While a right-click in the Check Out dialog box will retrieve the menu for you, (and can be useful if you want to save the file list of all files you are about to affect), let your fingers do the commanding:
Use CRTL+A to Select All the files, and Click the “Check Out” checkbox of one of the files.
Or simply use CTRL+L to get both actions in one.
Then click Check Out and be done!
Alternately, filter for only Assembly files using CTRL+E and typing *.sldasm in the Select Files dialog box.
Click OK to select assemblies only.
Alternate-Alternately, you can get the latest version of a file set with only the press of a CTRL+G!
After you’ve completed the Update Values in Files process, proceed to your Faster-than-ever check-in operation.
Use CTRL+U as a shortcut to Check In All Files.
Keep all files Checked Out with a CTRL+K if you have more work to perform on them.
Or clear your cache of all those files by Removing All Local Copies using CTRL+O.
And remember that “Keep Checked Out” and “Remove Local Copy” are mutually exclusive. Standard Select All (CTRL+A) and Fileter (CTRL+E) functions still apply. And now it’s time to submit the file set for approval.
Speed up this process using CTRL+T to Change State on all files at once.
Now stop “clicking” and get DOING!
