Manchester, UK, a city known for the Industrial Revolution, now is\u00a0home to one of the largest revitalization\u00a0areas of engineering design technology. \u00a0FABLAB Manchester UK <\/a>is a great example of how the Fab Foundation<\/a> is bringing together .org through community, .edu through education, and .com through entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

FABLAB Manchester & Ellesmere PortUK\u00a0Manager,\u00a0Dr David Armson \u00a0<\/strong>shared his vision during last month’s visit. \u00a0David and I met 2 years ago at FABLAB 10 in Barcelona. \u00a0\u00a0Now Manchester and surrounding communities are benefiting from David’s vision.<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

Popular activities include\u00a0working with wood,<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

3D Printing in ABS and other polymers,<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

and laser etching in multiple materials.<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

David explained how members of FABLAB Manchester have gone on to\u00a0make a difference. \u00a0Six architecture students have developed a “Contemplation Station” prototype structure.<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

On weekends, artists hold classes for younger student designers in 3D Printed \u00a0fashion design wearables and learning to use the tools in the FABLAB. \u00a0David is also reaching out to teachers to build their skills.<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

New ideas are\u00a0launched from the entrepreneur spirit of the FabLab, for example, \u00a0producing a new connector for the MacBook has created a new type of start-up.<\/p>\n

\"SolidWorks<\/p>\n

While I was there, a mold designer came in for some advice from Michael and used SOLIDWORKS to illustrate the problem and determine the solution.<\/p>\n

\"FabLabs<\/p>\n

And FABLABS are growing beyond Manchester. \u00a0This year, a FABLAB London<\/a> opened providing more access to design and making.<\/p>\n
