Printed Wireless Hexapod\u201d won the 2015 WPI Mechanical Engineering Provost Award. \u00a0The multi-discipline engineering team of <strong>Tyler Collins<\/strong>, <strong>Cody Woodward-Wallace<\/strong>, <strong>Aras Nehir Keskin<\/strong>, <strong>Andrew Beaupre <\/strong>brought together mechanical design, engineering analysis, electrical design, computer engineering, software programming and control theory to take the top prize.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7111\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/SolidWorks-Hexapod-Second-Model-WP-I.bmp\" alt=\"SolidWorks Hexapod Second Model WP I\" width=\"542\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7109\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/SolidWorks-Hexapod-Final-Iteration-WP-I.bmp\" alt=\"SolidWorks Hexapod Final Iteration WP I\" width=\"541\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Master Qualifying Project, MQP, senior capstone, is an advanced, team based, 1 year project, that culminates what students have learned in 4 years of engineering study.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7119\" award recognizes the most outstanding student team MQP for design excellence in a chosen academic discipline.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7107\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/SolidWorks-Simulation-Hexapod-Leg-Analysis.bmp\" alt=\"SolidWorks Simulation Hexapod Leg Analysis\" width=\"519\" height=\"523\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Competing against 57 teams, judges from industry and academia had a difficult decision.\u00a0 The Hexapod team stood out by designing and constructing a working prototype that was low cost, reliable, serviceable, \u00a0modular, and wireless control for research use.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7110\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Robotic-Hexapod-Joints-WPI.bmp\" alt=\"Robotic Hexapod Joints WPI\" width=\"615\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students made difficult decisions on the design of components for their terrestrial Hexapod (six legged robot) and the use of additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques based on functionality, time and cost.\u00a0 For example,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple design iterations with SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation<\/li>\n<li>Gears in PLA using a MakerBot 3D Printer<\/li>\n<li>Complex ball joint legs in ABS with Stratasys Dimension 3D Printer.<\/li>\n<li>Laser cutting acrylic for shell of control box and cover of the Hexapod to view internal components<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scoring was based on technical content, competence, poster layout and oral presentation skills.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7113\"
