For example, properly locating the bolt clearance holes for a new snowboard binding base plate can assure correct assembly on the device and the interchangeability of different brands. Students will create a <em>functional gage<\/em> tool that can be sued to check whether or not the part meets specifications. It consists of four pins for each of the clearance holes and a notch for the alignment hub. Good parts will fit over all the pins, while bad parts will not.
