\nAbo-Shaeer<\/a>, inspiration to the next generation of engineers and new recipient
\nof a $500,000 no-strings-attached MacArthur Genius Grant. 
\n\"10ABOSHAEER-CONTEXT\"<\/a> <\/span> <\/p>\n

Abo-Shaeer was selected for his ground-breaking work as a
\nphysics teacher and founder of the Dos Pueblos
\nEngineering Academy<\/a>, a model of the kind of education that can dramatically
\nchange students' lives. The school within a school in Santa Barbara, Calif., delivers a
\nrigorous applied science curriculum that integrates physics, engineering and
\nmath; hands-on building projects; and competitions like FIRST<\/a>
\nRobotics. DPEA has managed the rare feat of attracting young women to
\nengineering education \u2013 they make up approximately half the DPEA student body,
\nwell above the national average in advanced sciences.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbo-Shaeer\u2019s novel and effective model of science
\neducation is instilling a passion for the physical sciences in young men and
\nwomen and is contributing to the preparation of the next generation of
\nscientists and engineers for the twenty-first century,\u201d says the foundation.<\/p>\n

The DPEA program is weaving entrepreneurship and business
\ninto its programming and building a new 12,000-square foot engineering
\ncampus<\/a>, which will be a far cry from its current 900 square feet. The
\ncampus will include a machine shop, prototype shop, computer lab, conference
\nroom, and three classrooms. Abo-Shaeer\u2019s team is hoping to triple enrollment
\nand turn fewer heartbroken students away. <\/p>\n

We\u2019d also like to give a shout out to DPEA\u2019s FIRST
\nRobotics team<\/a>,
\n\u201cTeam 1717,\u201d also known as the D\u2019Penguineers, winners of multiple awards at the
\nregional and international levels of FIRST. Team members work full time for six
\nweeks to design, build, and program their Penguinbot. Earlier this year, the
\nteam requested and received our sponsorship \u2013 50 licenses of SolidWorks
\nStudent Edition<\/a>, which includes our high-end simulation products. This is
\nTeam 1717\u2019s fourth year using our software. We bumped into the team most
\nrecently at the national championships in April at the Georgia Dome. They\u2019re an
\nimpressive group who are pretty enthusiastic about  <\/span>engineering 
\n<\/span>and using SolidWorks to design excellent robots.<\/p>\n

\n\"Team_1717_2010\"<\/a> <\/span> If you want to learn more about Abo-Shaeer, DPEA, and
\ntheir robotics accomplishments, read the book. \u201cThe
\nNew Cool: A Visionary Teacher, His FIRST Robotics Team, and the Ultimate Battle
\nof Smarts<\/a>\u201d is  <\/span>due in March 2011.<\/p>\n
