So what is SAE Aero Design?&#0160;&#0160; You think of SAE for Formula, Baja, Hybrid &#8211; cars.&#0160; But there is also &#0160;serious competition for aerospace engineering students&#0160;- this is not just a&#0160;model airplane that I used to build with my dad.&#0160; The SAE Aero competition requires great engineering and design skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e201538e00369f970b.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"2011 SAE Aero Design West (2)\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e201538e00369f970b image-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e201538e00369f970b-800wi.jpg\" title=\"2011 SAE Aero Design West (2)\" \/><\/a>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft must take off within 200 feet, have a total dimension of 225 inches, use a standard design engine, and carry different loads for every flight &#8211; while remaining stable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3ac86970d.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"TAMU AS-1103 rendered\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3ac86970d image-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3ac86970d-800wi.jpg\" title=\"TAMU AS-1103 rendered\" \/><\/a>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>Texas A&amp;M used a variety of SolidWorks software tools to design, analyze,&#0160;and render their plane.<\/p>\n<p>To turn on the Finite Element Applications (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics Applications (CFD),&#0160;Start SolidWorks,&#0160;Select New, Part.<\/p>\n<p>Go to Tools, Add Ins.&#0160; Check one of the following:<\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks Simulation for Finite Element Analysis<\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks Motion for Kinematic Analysis<\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks Flow Simulation for CFD Analysis<\/p>\n<p>Once these applications are selected, a series of tutorials will appear under Help, SolidWorks Simulation Tutorials or SolidWorks Flow Simulation tutorials.&#0160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3c7fb970d.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"SolidWorks FEA Tutotials\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3c7fb970d\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2014e87f3c7fb970d-800wi.jpg\" title=\"SolidWorks FEA Tutotials\" \/><\/a>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>There are hundreds of simulation tutorials that can determine, stress, fatigue, vibration, non-linear and composite materials analysis, and event based motion.&#0160; Some of the tutorials are theoretical &#8211; that provide the analytical solution and look more like examples would see in a text book &#8211; such as a&#0160;plate with a hole or uni-axial bar, with simple boundary conditions.&#0160;
