Brush our teeth, take a shower, and use the toilet.&#0160; In the western world, we don\u2019t think about clean water or the waste water process.&#0160; In the developing world, designing a system to reduce disease transmitted through improper waste disposal is an engineering and environmental&#0160; challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;&#0160;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eVQaMsvBLb8\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I got a chance to talk to California Institute of Technology, mechanical engineering PhD candidate, <strong>Asghar Aryanfar<\/strong> about the project his fellow engineers and scientists are working on.&#0160; Their prototype will be installed in New Delhi, India later this summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2019103e2590a970c.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Reactor components\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e2019103e2590a970c image-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2019103e2590a970c-800wi.jpg\" title=\"Reactor components\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funds the project, \u201cReinventing the Toilet, a Self-Contained, PV-Powered Domestic Toilet and Wastewater Treatment System.\u201d&#0160; The project is under the direction of <a href=\"https:\/\/hoffmann.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Michael Hoffman CalTech\">Michael Hoffman<\/a>, Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering at CalTech.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e20192abab580d970d.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Simulation sample 1\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e20192abab580d970d\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e20192abab580d970d-800wi.jpg\" title=\"Simulation sample 1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team used SolidWorks and SolidWorks Flow Simulation for&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidworks.com\/sw\/education\/university-research-software-grant.htm?scid=sw_edu_main_researchers\" target=\"_self\" title=\"SolidWorks Academic Research\">Academic Research<\/a> to maximize the amount of waste that can be processed in a single day of sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Great project, thank you for sharing!&#0160;
