I went to a public school where nearly all of us qualified for the free-and-reduced-lunch program. I didn\u2019t have many enrichment opportunities growing up that money can bring: But I made the most of the ones that were there such as FIRST Robotics which was all paid for by our sponsors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Tell us more about FIRST Robotics and the people that influenced your decision to become an engineer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16967\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-615x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-615x243.jpg 615w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-768x303.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-1536x606.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture-728x287.jpg 728w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Team-Picture.jpg 1622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: I was part of FRC Team 5900 &#8211; Fighting Mongooses in Dalton.\u00a0 My childhood friend Ronnie (RJ) Walker introduced me to the team.\u00a0 Brian Cooksey and\u00a0 Marten Hutchinson were my FIRST mentors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: How were you introduced to SOLIDWORKS? \u00a0Through class, a teacher? A mentor?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: I was introduced to SOLIDWORKS at<a href=\"https:\/\/shs.wcsga.net\/\"> Southeast Whitfield County High School<\/a> in my Engineering Class.\u00a0 My engineering teacher, Mr. Ben Oliver, altered the course to focus more on 3D modeling with the goal getting students certified in SOLIDWORKS.\u00a0 I achieved SOLIDWORKS Certifications: CSWA (Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate) and CSWP (Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional) in high school.<\/p>\n<p>After I graduating high school, I was able to obtain a paid internship at Brown Industries. I drafted the fabrication drawings for commercial product displays using SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Where did you go to college and what did you study?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: I first started out at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daltonstate.edu\/\">Dalton State College,<\/a> majoring in physics and pre-engineering for 2 years I was able to continue working at Brown Industries.\u00a0 I then transferred to Georgia Tech majoring in Mechanical engineering. Marten Hutchinson, my FIRST mentor,\u00a0 is a mechanical engineer and a Georgia Tech alum.\u00a0 Georgia Tech is one of the top engineering schools and I received in-state tuition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Explain change in your undergraduate program to why you switched to Structural Engineering for your Master\u2019s focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: I enjoyed the critical thinking and design side of engineering and Statics.\u00a0 I had an internship as an ME but job-shadowed civil engineers in the same company.\u00a0 I was immediately more interest in the work the civil engineers did.\u00a0 It was large scale with immediate feedback.\u00a0 I changed my undergraduate major to Civil Engineering.\u00a0 After graduation, I was accepted into Georgia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0 Structural Engineering and Mechanics and Materials (SEMM) Master&#8217;s program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16968\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-615x461.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-615x461.jpeg 615w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students-728x546.jpeg 728w, https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Working-with-Students.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Tell us about the Student Steel Bridge competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: For two years, I was a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/asce.ce.gatech.edu\/?page_id=265\">Georgia Tech\u2019s<\/a> team (GT ASCE)\u00a0 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/education\/university-programs\/student-steel-bridge-competition\/\">Student Steel Bridge Competition<\/a>, which challenges student teams to develop a scale-model steel bridge. Teams must determine how to fabricate their bridge and then plan for an efficient assembly under timed construction at the competition. Bridges are then load tested and weighed. Students are also judged on bridge aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Last year, you were awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisc.org\/giving\/updates\/your-impact-update-november-2023\/\">AISC Steven J. Fenves Scholarship from the AISC Education Foundation<\/a>, named after Dr. Steven J. Fenves, a pioneer in Load and Resistance Factor Design, and AISC 50-year volunteer.\u00a0 \u00a0Rafa, you have achieved so much. \u00a0What do you want to do next?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: In the next few weeks, I want to obtain my Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification. I would like to work in the structural engineering consulting in the Atlanta Area and design buildings. Become a seasoned engineer that is always learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Note<\/strong>: Rafa did achieve his Fundamentals of Engineering Certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie<\/strong>: Anything else you want to tell our SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Student communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rafa<\/strong>: My parents are immigrants from Mexico, and they are working class. With hard work and perseverance, and after applying for many scholarships, I was able to graduate as salutatorian of my high school and Sigma Cum Laude at Georgia Tech, with no student debt from my undergraduate education.\u00a0 I hope someone out there can read this, relate to my background, and take inspiration from my story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Rafael for sharing your journey with the SOLIDWORKS community.
