\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 After teaching 1000’s of students and writing about SOLIDWORKS for over 25 years, David Planchard, emeritus WPI, is exploring xDesign.\u00a0 Through the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Lesson series, David helps educators understand the differences and similarities between xDesign and SOLIDWORKS through simple examples. He also introduces new apps in the engineering design process. \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

What is the main different between SOLIDWORKS model files and xDesign Physical Products?<\/p>\n

Are SOLIDWORKS files and xDesign physical products the same? No!<\/p>\n

Do you save and store the files the same? No!<\/p>\n

Does SOLIDWORKS and xDesign treat parts (components) and assemblies the same? No!<\/p>\n

The lesson covers how to import files into xDesign. Two file types are SOLIDWORKS part and SOLIDWORKS assembly (zip). Use the created Dashboard in Lesson 4<\/a> or the individual apps.<\/p>\n

Create a Bookmark Workspace using the Bookmark Editor Widget. Create three Bookmark folders. <\/strong>Think of a Bookmark Workspace as a directory which can contain Bookmark folders. Bookmark folders are used to further categorize bookmarks like a folder tree structure (Windows Explorer).<\/p>\n

Review Metadata in the columns of the Bookmark Editor and Custom properties from SOLIDWORKS files.<\/p>\n

Use bookmarks to delete entire groups of data. For assemblies within the bookmark folder, there is an option to delete the entire structure of the assembly and all reference components. Another option to delete files (Physical Products) from the platform is to use the Collaborative Lifecycle App.<\/p>\n

One of the best simple practices for SOLIDWORKS data is to create bookmarks upon the initial save to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Choosing \u201cSave With Options\u201d will give the user the choice of existing bookmark folders or to create a new bookmark to contain the file references.<\/p>\n

In xDesign when you create a new component, the three default planes (xy), (yz), (zx) are aligned with specific views. The plane you select for your first sketch determines the orientation of the component.<\/p>\n

When you import a component from SOLIDWORKS, the three default planes in xDesign are align to different views. This is a very important change.<\/p>\n

Right-click Wheel and Rocker, Open Link in a New Tab, Unzip,\u00a0 to actively follow this lesson with SOLIDWORKS xDesign.<\/p>\n

Open <\/strong>the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Lessons Dashboard. Review Lesson 4<\/strong> if you did not create the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Lessons Dashboard.<\/p>\n

There are three Widgets in the Dashboard: xDesign, 3DSpace, and Bookmark Editor. The Collaborative space is Quick Start xDesign. Class ES-1310 is the first tab.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: If you do not have the SOLIDWORKS xDesign Lesson #4: Create a Dashboard<\/a>, access the apps directly from the My Apps list.<\/p>\n

Import a SOLIDWORKS part or any supported file type into xDesign. Note: <\/strong>A Windows model file cannot be directly opened in xDesign. The model file needs to be imported.<\/p>\n

Click Import File<\/strong> in the xDesign Widget.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Import dialog box is displayed. Use the File on Disk option.<\/p>\n

Click File on Disk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click the File Format drop-down arrow<\/strong>. View the supported file types.<\/p>\n

Select SOLIDWORKS Part (*sldprt)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Click Choose File<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Double-click<\/strong> the SOLIDWORKS Part (*sldprt) file that you want to import. Later in the lesson, we will import a SOLIDWORKS Assembly (*sldam) zip file.<\/p>\n

Select Destination.<\/p>\n

Click the drop-down arrow<\/strong> under Destination. There are two Collaborative spaces.<\/p>\n

Select Quick Start xDesign<\/strong>. Note<\/strong>: The Quick Start xDesign and Engineering Design Collaborative spaces were created in Lesson 2<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Click Import<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The xDesign Work Area is displayed. Wheel is the name of the Physical Product. The geometry is Imported.Body.1. The xy plane is the Front plane. The Triad displays the Y axis vertical. This is similar to SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n

Save the Wheel.<\/p>\n

Click the expansion<\/strong> arrow<\/strong> as illustrated in the Action bar. View the options.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>: When indexing is complete, the Wheel is displayed in the 3DSpace Widget. You may need to click Sort, and select the most recent Creation date.<\/p>\n

Click the New Bookmark<\/strong> icon as illustrated. Note<\/strong>: You can also right-click on Bookmarks.<\/p>\n

Upload a SOLIDWORKS part file directly to the Metal Components folder. The SOLIDWORKS part file is saved as a Document. The example for the lesson is FLATBAR(.sldprt).<\/p>\n

Click Upload<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

View the results of the uploaded document. This is not a Physical Product.<\/p>\n

View the available options for the FLATBAR document.<\/p>\n

In Windows, it is easy to delete a file. Sometimes too easy. In xDesign you cannot directly delete a Physical Product from your Collaborative space. One benefit of using bookmarks is the ability to delete a single component or entire groups of data (assembly or subassembly).<\/p>\n

Delete the Wheel.<\/p>\n

Click Wheel<\/strong> under Title.<\/p>\n

Click the Delete<\/strong> icon.<\/p>\n

Import a SOLIDWORKS assembly using xDesign. The SOLIDWORKS assembly needs to be zipped.<\/p>\n

Click Import File<\/strong> from the xDesign Widget.<\/p>\n

The Import box is displayed. The example used is a SOLIDWORKS Rocker assembly zip folder.<\/p>\n

Select <\/strong>the inputs.<\/p>\n

Click Import<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Rocker component is displayed in xDesign. xDesign creates components in a single modeling environment. The term component is used because both parts and assemblies are treated the same. This is very different from SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n

The xy plane is the Front plane. The Triad displays the Y axis vertical. This is similar to SOLIDWORKS.<\/p>\n

Save the component.<\/p>\n

Click Save<\/strong> from the Action bar in xDesign.<\/p>\n
