{"id":139,"date":"2012-08-10T14:33:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T18:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/teacher\/hot-air-balloon-in-solidworks"},"modified":"2012-08-10T14:33:00","modified_gmt":"2012-08-10T18:33:00","slug":"hot-air-balloon-in-solidworks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/teacher\/2012\/08\/hot-air-balloon-in-solidworks.html","title":{"rendered":"Hot Air Balloon in SolidWorks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2017617238fb9970c.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hot Air Balloon\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e2017617238fb9970c\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2017617238fb9970c-500wi.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Hot Air Balloon\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this post I decide to create something typically not seen every day; a hot air balloon.&#0160; This model was unique in the fact that it integrated surface modeling, solid modeling, and weldments all into one project.<\/p>\n<p>To create the balloon, I used a partial revolve feature to get only one section of the balloon.&#0160; I then used a circular pattern to create enough segments to create the complete balloon shape.&#0160; The surface trim tool was used to remove the overlapping material from the balloon.&#0160; When that was complete, I knitted together the surfaces to form one complete surface.&#0160; That surface was then thickened and each segment was given a different color.&#0160;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e20167692e840c970b.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hot Air Balloon Basket\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e20167692e840c970b\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e20167692e840c970b-500wi.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Hot Air Balloon Basket\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160; For the basket, I first created a 3D sketch that was the skeleton frame of the basket.&#0160; I then used weldments to create the tubing for the basket.&#0160; Using the weldments as references, I created a series of sketches that gave me points on the outside so that a surface could be created that encompasses the bottom of the basket.<\/p>\n<p>The burners were a fairly straight forward part made but using a revolve feature for the base of it and then two helixes were swept for the wire top.&#0160; The only difficulty came when connecting the two upper end points of the helixes.&#0160; In order to do this a 3D sketch was created that used a spline to connect them.&#0160; Reference lines were used to give points that were in known locations within the space (See image below).<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e2017617239c58970c.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><\/a><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e201774409a2fa970d.jpg\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Burner Coil Sketch\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d83451706569e201774409a2fa970d\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.solidworks.com\/uploads\/sites\/3\/6a00d83451706569e201774409a2fa970d-320wi.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Burner Coil Sketch\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those parts were brought into an assembly and mated.&#0160; The ropes were then created in context to connect the balloon to the basket.&#0160; I also added some propane tanks in order to make the hot air balloon a little more realistic.&#0160; Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>Ian Jutras<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#0160; For this post I decide to create something typically not seen every day; a hot air balloon.&#0160; This model was unique in the fact that it integrated surface modeling, solid modeling, and weldments all into one project.
