Over four million children die each year before their first
\nmonth of life; 99% of them in developing countries. For those of you who joined
\nus at SolidWorks World<\/a> this year (or watched the videos), you\u2019ll recall us
\nrecognizing local nonprofit Design That Matters<\/span><\/a> for
\ntackling this problem with an incubator <\/a>designed specifically for the needs of
\ndeveloping nations. <\/p>\n

Well, DtM isn\u2019t resting on its laurels; the engineering and
\ndesign students have taken on the next phase, providing a low-cost, low-maintenance respiration
\ndevice<\/span><\/a> for \u201cthermoregulation\u201d using CPAP (Continuous Positive Air
\nPressure). This will help premature and low birth weight infants with
\nrespiratory distress. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ll let you go to their website to learn more about the
\nmedical condition \u2013 I\u2019ve already exceeded the limits of my medical know-how.
\nSo, let\u2019s look at the winning design, as presented by a cross-functional team of students<\/span><\/a>
\nfrom the MIT school of Engineering, the Sloan Graduate school, and the Rhode Island School of Design.<\/p>\n

\"DTM\"<\/a>  <\/p>\n

I was lucky enough to attend their final presentation<\/span><\/a> and
\nwas blown away by the team\u2019s resourcefulness and problem-solving skills. Now,
\nthese are students from very different backgrounds and disciplines, all thrown
\ntogether to attack this one problem against a strict deadline (the grading
\ncycle). So seeing them learn how to work together was fascinating. But the
\ndesign was cool. Most respirators cost from $2,500 – $9,000 and require lots of
\ntraining and expensive parts. <\/p>\n

This device (shown above) had one moving part, and made clever use of
\noff-the-shelf products to save cost and complexity. It ended up coming in under
\n$600, and did all the important things of the fancy machines. The user
\ninterface got the same attention as the device itself, with no words and simple
\n\u201chappy face\u201d and "sad face" pictures for three lights. There were three design goals:
\naffordability, intuitive UI, and the ability to be locally-maintained. The DtM students went
\nthree for three! <\/p>\n

What do we get out of this? Thousands of lives saved, and
\nthe next generation of engineers and designers who are inspired to make this
\nworld a little better. What a great time to be an engineer! <\/p>\n
