Montech
\nAG<\/a> doesn't look like a \u201cgreen\u201d company at first glance. Based in Switzerland<\/st1:country><\/st1:place>, the
\nSolidWorks customer<\/a> designs and manufactures conveyor systems for
\nproduction facilities \u2013<\/span> a pretty standard product in an industrial economy,
\nalbeit with the many innovations Montech has developed over the years. But a
\nrecent piece of news Montech issued is a window on how the emerging sustainable
\neconomy offers opportunities to established companies that know how to expand
\ntheir thinking. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s not a lot of
\nobvious tie-in between conveyor belts and solar cells until you consider that
\nto manufacture solar cells on the large scale needed to meet global demand, solar cell companies need large-scale production equipment like
\nconveyors. Solar photovoltaic cells are delicate, ultra-thin wafers that need
\ncareful handling. Montech has designed a conveyor that eliminates the process
\nof lifting the solar cell off the conveyor belt, substituting a gentle \u201chand
\noff\u201d that eliminates the risk of creating micro cracks in the cells that erode
\ntheir performance. <\/p>\n

The fact that an
\nestablished company like Montech invested in developing a specialized conveyor
\nfor solar cell manufacturing can also be viewed as a bellwether for the
\nrenewable energy economy. One of the main barriers to wide solar photovoltaic
\nenergy adoption is the cost of solar cells. Economy of scale brings down unit
\nprices. When companies like Montech are designing high-volume production
\nequipment for solar cells, we can take it as a good sign that the renewable
\nenergy economy is emerging from its long nascent period. Montech will demonstrate its solar cell
\nconveyor<\/a> at the Photovoltaic Technology Show<\/a> in Stuttgart, Germany, on April
\n27-29. <\/o:p><\/p>\n
