Stock cars consume gas and<br \/>\nrubber like Mountain Dew and corn chips, and no one complains if you leave your rig idling.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p>Last week, however, was a little<br \/>\ndifferent at NHMS as 30 college and university teams from US, India, Italy,<br \/>\nRussia, and Taiwan competed in the fourth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula-hybrid.org\/\">Formula Hybrid International Competition<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p><a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4054\/4587421064_48fc1a18d3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p>Formula Hybrid challenges college<br \/>\nand university students to design, build, and race high-performance, plug-in<br \/>\nhybrid vehicles. Building on the Formula SAE program, Formula Hybrid adds an<br \/>\nextra level of complexity: fuel efficiency. Teams were limited to 2.3 liters<br \/>\n(0.61 gal) of fuel, which equates to 22.5 mpg \u2013 a pittance for a race car.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>The competition was co-sponsored by DS SolidWorks and organized by the&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.dartmouth.edu\/\" style=\"color: blue; text-decoration: underline; cursor: pointer;\">Thayer School of Engineering<\/a>&#0160;at Dartmouth, a SolidWorks customer just up the road from the track (see today\u2019s news release).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p>In addition to fuel efficiency, scoring considers<br \/>\ninspection, presentation (the business case), design, acceleration, autocross<br \/>\n(acceleration, cornering and braking), and students\u2019<br \/>\nunderstanding of their design\u2019s environmental impact.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><o:p><\/o:p>\u201cI like the [competition\u2019s] engineering<br \/>\naspect,\u201d Dartmouth captain Ben Sampson told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20100506\/GJNEWS02\/705069622\">Citizen<br \/>\nof Laconia<\/a> newspaper. \u201cTo me, there\u2019s just no better way to show off<br \/>\nengineering than with a performance car.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: &#39;Times New Roman&#39;,serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The overall winner was perennial<br \/>\nFormula Hybrid powerhouse <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polito.it\/index.en.php\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Politecnico<br \/>\ndi Torino<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">. The other winners are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula-hybrid.org\/pdf\/2010-results-summary.pdf\" style=\"font-family: Arial;\">here<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">.
