{"id":33481,"date":"2007-10-17T14:52:03","date_gmt":"2007-10-17T18:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/swcommunity\/is-dr-norman-ge"},"modified":"2007-10-17T14:52:03","modified_gmt":"2007-10-17T18:52:03","slug":"is-dr-norman-ge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.solidworks.com\/solidworksblog\/2007\/10\/is-dr-norman-ge.html","title":{"rendered":"Is Dr. Norman Getting a Bad Rap?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dezignstuff.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/09\/keynote-speakers-for-solidworks-world-announced\/\">Matt Write&#8217;s<\/a> has some concerns about the choice of Dr. Don Norman as one of the keynote speakers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidworks.com\/pages\/swworld08\/index.html\">SolidWorks World 2008<\/a> in San Diego.&nbsp; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidsmack.com\/a-ceo-a-professor-emeritus-and-marine-explorer-walk-into-a-bar-at-solidworks-world-2008\/2007-10-10\/\">SolidSmack<\/a> blog also echos a couple of these concerns.<\/p>\n<p>I can understand why there might be questions about a presentation called &quot;Emotional Design&quot;&#8230;&quot;emotional&quot; being the operative word.&nbsp; But are we forgetting the word &quot;<strong>design<\/strong>&quot;?<\/p>\n<p>Based on what I&#8217;ve read, Dr. Norman is a terrific choice to speak to SolidWorks Users.&nbsp; His credentials are impeccable &#8211; he&#8217;s spent time working with <strong>design<\/strong> teams at Apple and Hewlett-Packard, was part of a team brought in to determine the cause of the Three Mile Island disaster (turned out to be <strong>design<\/strong> flaws), and in 2006 was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal for development in the field of user-centered <strong>design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, keynote speeches aren&#8217;t necessarily designed to educate as much as they are to inspire, provoke thought, and even entertain.&nbsp; Sources that have heard him speak tell me that Dr. Norman will do that (and more).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll bet there will be plenty of emotion to go around after Dr. Norman&#8217;s address &#8211; delight, awe, and surprise come to mind.&nbsp; I doubt that there will be any remorse, sadness, or apprehension.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Leave the tissues at home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matt Write&#8217;s has some concerns about the choice of Dr. Don Norman as one of the keynote speakers at SolidWorks World 2008 in San Diego.&nbsp; The SolidSmack blog also echos a couple of these concerns.
