You may know her as one of the Main Stage speakers at \u003Cstrong>3D\u003C\u002Fstrong>EXPERIENCE World 2020, as someone featured in past \u003Ca href=\".\u002Fbrands\u002Fteacher\u002F2020\u002F01\u002Fdanielle-boyer-makes-steam-fun-with-the-engineering-design-club.html\">SOLIDWORKS Educational blogs\u003C\u002Fa>, or from her appearance in our \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblogs.solidworks.com\u002Fsolidworksblog\u002F2019\u002F10\u002Fborn-to-design-podcast-how-an-18-yr-old-ushering-in-the-next-generation-of-creators-podcast-with-danielle-boyer.html\">Born to Design podcast\u003C\u002Fa>. She is the inventor of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.steamconnection.org\u002Fekgar\">Every Kid Gets a Robot\u003C\u002Fa> (EKGAR), a robot that costs less than $20 and goes to kids for free.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Danielle’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) outreach continues to expand through her heritage.  Since 1990, November is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnativeamericanheritagemonth.gov\u002F\">Native American Heritage Month (NAHM),\u003C\u002Fa> in the USA, an opportunity to celebrate and uplift Indigenous peoples and their beautiful and unique cultures.  I had a virtual chat with Danielle, now age 20, about why NAHM matters to our SOLIDWORKS community?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Danielle stated, “Indigenous peoples are grossly underrepresented in technical careers. In fact, according to Intel and their racial breakdown in the ‘\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.steamconnection.org\u002Fdiversity\">Overview of Diversity in the U.S. Technical Workforce\u003C\u002Fa>,’ Indigenous peoples don’t even have their own category, they are placed in the “Other” category. According to the U.S. Department of Education, roughly three out of every ten Native students drop out before graduating from high school in both reservations and cities, furthering the disparity of Indigenous peoples within technology centered careers.”\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Luckily, there are people actively working to close this gap.  Shawn Ray and Danielle of The\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.steamconnection.org\"> STEAM Connection\u003C\u002Fa>, two young Indigenous people and SOLIDWORKS users, are using their unique talents and skills in engineering to make the change they want to see within their communities.  They are doing it with robots.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Shawn Ray is a 21-year-old Navajo (Dine) electrical engineering student \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"472\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblog-assets.solidworks.com\u002Fuploads\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F3-shawn-ray.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62210\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblog-assets.solidworks.com\u002Fuploads\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F3-shawn-ray.jpg.webp 472w, https:\u002F\u002Fblog-assets.solidworks.com\u002Fuploads\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F3-shawn-ray-300x300.jpg.webp 300w, https:\u002F\u002Fblog-assets.solidworks.com\u002Fuploads\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F3-shawn-ray-150x150.jpg.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003Cp>who attends \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgo.okstate.edu\u002F\">Oklahoma State University\u003C\u002Fa>. His current work involves the research and development of artificial muscles for robotic exoskeleton applications as well as actively working as a board member on The STEAM Connection and member of his local university \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.aises.org\u002F\">AISES\u003C\u002Fa> (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) chapter to encourage and build up more Indigenous students into the STEAM community.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Danielle is one of PEOPLE’s Girls Changing the World, a L’Oreal Paris Woman of Worth, and is part of an NBC special acknowledging her hard work. She founded The STEAM Connection in 2019 and works to bring accessible, affordable, and diverse educational resources to kids. SOLIDWORKS continues to support their educational efforts they have been working towards and continues to provide resources that directly benefit Indigenous communities across the country. Through the SOLIDWORKS Education Edition, Danielle was able to invent EKGAR, and because of its low cost and ability to run without Internet access, it has proven to be the perfect resource for teaching youth about STEAM. The STEAM Connection has collectively sent out over 4,500 robots since the beginning of 2019. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.swugn.org\u002F\">SOLIDWORKS User Group Network\u003C\u002Fa> has run three fundraisers for EKGAR, helping make these large shipments possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>During the pandemic, both Danielle and Shawn have put on the COVID-19 Robotics Initiative to bring free EKGAR robots to Black and Indigenous youth to encourage the continuous growth and learning capabilities among communities. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fc\u002FTooTallToby\u002Fplaylists\">TooTallToby\u003C\u002Fa> has also helped with this endeavor. It has been the perfect teaching tool to use through video conferencing platforms. No matter where their students may be, they can learn to CAD at home.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Both Shawn and Danielle are tenacious in providing educational resources and speaking on their experiences. During NAHM, they both keynoted the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnativesintech.org\u002F\">Natives in Tech Conference\u003C\u002Fa> to share ways educators and technologists could become more involved in bringing EduTech to their local communities that are underrepresented. On Education Day, with the help of the SOLIDWORKS community, we assembled 150 EKGAR kits, 50% given to Indigenous organizations.
