Human influence and environmental changes have led to a spike in wildfires across the globe, and the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.opb.org\u002Fnews\u002Farticle\u002Fhow-we-fight-wildfires\u002F#.Veh1Qvey_AE.facebook\">helicopters\u003C\u002Fa> that fight back the flames and save lost or hurt citizens are becoming more and more important. SAE teams participating in the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbit.ly\u002F2TPXhe8\">SOLIDWORKS xDesign SAE Challenge\u003C\u002Fa> can choose to design the helitack helicopter of the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>What is “helitack?” According to the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fs.fed.us\u002Fscience-technology\u002Ffire\u002Fhelitack\">US Forest Service\u003C\u002Fa>, “helitack crews are teams of firefighters who are transported by helicopters to wildfires.” Helitack crews carry firefighting equipment with them and may build firelines to stop wildfires. Crews can carry up to 120 pounds of equipment with them. What can be done to a helicopter to make carrying this crew and their equipment more efficient?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Helitack crews also perform Emergency Medical Short-haul, where they will \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhelicoptermaintenancemagazine.com\u002Farticle\u002Fups-and-downs-short-haul-vs-rescue-hoist-operations\">hoist\u003C\u002Fa> critically injured people up to the helicopter for removal and medical attention. When fighting fires, some helicopters are equipped with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nasa.gov\u002Fcontent\u002Fbambi-bucket-training-prepares-helicopter-crews-for-fighting-fires\">Bambi Buckets\u003C\u002Fa>, buckets that are designed to pick up and drop water on fires.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Helicopters of today can only carry so much weight, use Bambi Buckets to siphon so much water, and hoist so many people. As wildfires grow in strength and frequency, what can be designed to help the rescue helicopter of the future combat the flames?
