Who are they? What do they look like? What do they do? When prompted, most will picture a bespectacled white male grasping a pencil and a calculator. It’s a perception that’s got to change because it’s a perception that’s costing the industry.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\nYour country needs you \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>You don’t need Lord Kitchener to tell you that the UK needs more engineers. Engineering is currently worth over a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.director.co.uk\u002Fuk-engineering-sector-faces-skills-shortage-22341-2\u002F\">quarter of our GDP\u003C\u002Fa>. But there’s a lack of new talent pushing through the next generation. We’re facing an imminent \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Feducation\u002Fstem-awards\u002Fenergy\u002Fthe-great-uk-engineering-shortage\u002F\">shortage\u003C\u002Fa> of STEM applicants to step into the industries that require engineering. Too much demand; not enough supply.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>So, how to tackle that skills deficit? In identifying the lack of budding scientists, the engineering industry has self-diagnosed an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theengineer.co.uk\u002Fengineering-skills-shortage-overcoming-the-fear-and-uncertainty\u002F\">image problem\u003C\u002Fa>, and it’s been decided that it’s highly overdue a makeover.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\nWhat \u003Cem>is \u003C\u002Fem>the perception of engineers?\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In The Royal Academy of Engineering’s 2007 \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.raeng.org.uk\u002Fpublications\u002Fother\u002Fpublic-attitude-perceptions-engineering-engineers\">report\u003C\u002Fa> exploring attitudes towards the profession, there were many favourable findings to celebrate. From the outside looking in, engineering is seen as a highly-skilled, highly-sought after and handsomely paid profession.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In short, it’s a discipline that commands respect and remuneration in healthy doses. Not to mention the fact that it’s regarded as positive to the world at large; a discipline that advances science and solves problems.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>So far, so good.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\nThe bad news…\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The report’s conclusions pointed to a limited understanding of engineering by the public. And it’s still perceived as largely a white male industry for builders or architects. For starters, there’s been a determined focus on integrating more women into engineering. The slow gender shift started emphatically with the appointment of Naomi Climer as the Institute for Engineering Technologies’ first female president. Since taking up the position, she has spearheaded \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.infrastructure-intelligence.com\u002Farticle\u002Faug-2016\u002Fchanging-perceptions-about-engineering-and-creating-better-world\">initiatives\u003C\u002Fa> to stir interest in female engineers. The key to engaging children in engineering is to emphasise its crucial importance in kid-friendly fare, such as mobile games, innovative \u003Ca href=\".\u002Fbrands\u002Fsolidworksblog\u002F2017\u002F05\u002Fsolidworks-apps-kids-make-noise-maker-faire.html\">technologies\u003C\u002Fa>, and, of course, the internet. Demonstrating the achievement of engineering knowledge and skills plays a big part in showing off its potential and attraction.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Pop culture is doing its bit, with shows such as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.channel4.com\u002Finfo\u002Fpress\u002Fprogramme-information\u002Flego-masters\">Lego Masters\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theengineer.co.uk\u002Ffixing-the-perception-of-engineers\u002F\">Big Life Fix\u003C\u002Fa>, celebrating the joy and invention behind the skills. And, of course, even television’s most famous fictional scientist has taken a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002Fentertainment-arts-40624288\">huge step\u003C\u002Fa> towards better female representation.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Engineering a brighter future \u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>An inclusive approach. A broad appeal to children’s inquisitive nature. The harnessing of young ingenuity.
