It wasn&#8217;t until I was at \u003Cstrong>3D\u003C\u002Fstrong>EXPERIENCE World in Houston this past February, chatting with other SOLIDWORKS users, that Matthew Hall suggested I should do a Simpsons makers project. He pointed out how much content and so many inventive gadgets are featured in the show.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Growing up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, we were deeply influenced by The Simpsons&#8217; humor. In the early ‘90s, it felt like everything exploded with catchphrases, merchandise, hit songs (who remembers &#8220;Do the Bartman&#8221;?), and Bart-mania. The show’s satire on everyday American life, TV, politics, and religion became a significant part of pop culture.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once I got the idea to remake some of the wacky Simpsons’ inventions, I went down a rabbit hole, rewatching old episodes. In “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace,” from Season 10, Homer has this realization that he hasn’t built anything he’s proud of. We all have that moment at some point, right? So he decides to become an inventor like Thomas Edison. His inventions are disasters — a chair with a built-in toilet, an alarm that won’t stop beeping, a machine that shoots makeup at your face. But underneath the jokes, there’s a theme I connected to: a guy who looks at his life, decides it’s time to make something, and starts trying, however imperfectly, in his garage.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That was the start of my Simpsons invention board, where I compiled all the crazy objects from the show that I wanted to try building in real life. Cartoons make everything look easy. Real-life projects come with a lot of trial and error and their own set of challenges.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Starting Small: The Skateboard\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before working on any mechanical projects, I wanted to start with some simple tasks to warm up. I tried to build a skateboard, but I didn’t cut it at the right place. When I tested it with my friends, it broke almost immediately. I assumed that a skateboard wouldn’t require much planning and rushed through the design. In the show, the hammer swings with way more force than anyone would expect, which is part of what makes it so comical.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I had to decide between using a motor or a solenoid. A motor offers smooth, continuous rotation, which is great for consistent force, but it didn’t provide the sharp, punchy motion the hammer needed. A solenoid, on the other hand, stores energy and releases it all at once for a quick strike—much closer to the exaggerated swing seen in the cartoon. So, I went with the solenoid.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In my initial attempt, the solenoid I chose didn’t have enough power to create a real swinging force. So, I rebuilt the entire mechanism using a more powerful solenoid for greater energy storage, redesigned the coupler to transfer that energy to the arm more efficiently, and extended the arm for a wider and harder swing. He&#8217;s the embodiment of corporate greed and power, often accompanied by his loyal aide Waylon Smithers. Mr. Burns&#8217;s drawn-out “excellent,” with his fingers steepled, is one of the show’s most recognizable lines. To have a bit of fun, I wired up an Arduino to my YouTube subscriber count, so every time I get a new subscriber –&nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002F@carlos3dworld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cstrong>you can subscribe HERE!\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>&nbsp;– It triggers a little “excellent” moment.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Two more projects were inspired by the “King-Size Homer” episode from Season 7. In one memorable scene, Homer stares blankly at a computer screen, looking for the non-existent “any” key, which has become a running joke in pop culture. I decided to create a working keycap for my keyboard with “any” printed on it, and once that was done, I made a version with a face that launches an app when I double- or triple-tap it. Now, three quick taps open SOLIDWORKS on my machine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Later in that same episode, Homer, who is working from home, rigs up a drinking bird toy to repeatedly press the “Y” key, so he doesn’t have to sit there manually approving safety checks all day. Since liquids and 3D printing don’t mix well, I opted to use a servo motor instead of a real drinking bird. Mine sits on my desk, and randomly scrolls my phone every few seconds while I’m eating chips. Sometimes, the fun of building something is reason enough to create it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Proving a Concept\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A few of the Simpsons&#8217; inventions I worked on were about proving that something is possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I had a spare motor lying around and became curious: could I turn it into a generator? Technically, yes — spin a motor by hand, and it creates electricity. However, doing this by hand is almost impossible, and most people online were using a drill, which misses the point of building something that actually generates power on its own. So I pulled gears from the SOLIDWORKS gear library and built a geared system by hand to multiply motion. It ended up generating about five volts &#8211; enough to charge a phone or power a small fan. It’s an absurdly over-engineered way to charge a phone, but working through the design challenges and proving I could measure real output from a scrap motor was the point of the project.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The slingshot was another simple proof-of-concept. Bart&#8217;s slingshot is iconic in the show, representing his rebellious and mischievous nature. For those new to SOLIDWORKS, this is the kind of fun, functional 3D print that even beginners can try.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>From D’oh to Done: What I Learned From Designing the Simpsons Inventions\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Every project began with a question: could I take a wacky invention from The Simpsons and make it work in real life? You don’t need a fancy workshop or years of experience to start a fun project – or series of projects like this. All you need is a good idea, a willingness to fail and the interest to work through it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After working through these first Simpsons projects, I wanted to take on something a lot more ambitious: a fully functional robot powered by AI, 3D printing, and mechatronics, inspired by one of Lisa Simpson’s inventions. I call it Lingua, and it deserves a story of its own.
