In my experience, electrical and mechanical teams typically work in separate silos, or electrical designers are not brought in until the mechanical design is nearly complete. This disconnected workflow, unfortunately, remains the status quo for many organizations, despite a recent Tech Clarity report finding that “Top Performers are 2.1 times more likely than Others to rely on a single vendor for both electrical and mechanical design solutions, simplifying collaboration and tool integration.”

Standardizing on a unified software ecosystem has been proven to facilitate collaboration and elevate an organization to the next level of performance and efficiency. Yet many organizations persist in using disconnected tools and in staggered rather than collaborative design. The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform offers an alternative approach, allowing us to link 2D manufacturer data used in SOLIDWORKS Electrical to 3D models in both SOLIDWORKS Design and the CATIA design suite. This level of collaboration helps ensure not only proper form, fit, and function but also correct fill-duct ratios, strain reliefs, and wire lengths.

Team Communication

Sending a quick chat, text message, email, or even making a phone call are all disconnected ways to communicate. Within the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, conversations and communities provide a single source of truth for the entire team—including personnel not typically involved in engineering processes, such as manufacturing, logistics, or marketing—enabling them to be involved much earlier in a project’s lifecycle. Important files, images, and notes can be shared seamlessly, and teams can ask questions, exchange ideas, and create surveys, all within the same secure environment.

Beyond keeping everyone in the loop, frequent data and information exchange directly connects to business benefits. According to a recent TechClarity report, “84% of respondents who exchanged design data [frequently] found the frequency allowed them to avoid design conflicts. Less frequent data sharing led to more problems.” Consistent team communication helps keep teams aligned, breaks down design silos, and drastically reduces design conflicts, slashing the amount of rework on both the electrical and mechanical design teams.

Project Planning

For many of the projects I’ve worked on, tracking and assigning action items and project deadlines have been aspects of the design process that were often disconnected from the tools we used. What happens when parts are backordered, personnel are unexpectedly called away for travel, or a critical design challenge is discovered late in the process? These disruptions can cascade into missed deadlines, miscommunication, and costly delays, especially when project status lives in spreadsheets, sticky notes, or scattered email threads.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers integrated project planning capabilities that ensure action items are never overlooked or lost. Tasks, dependencies, and deadlines can be assigned, managed, and reviewed in a single environment. This keeps the entire team aligned from idea to execution, and from design to manufacturing. Whether you’re responding to supply chain disruptions, reallocating resources, or adjusting timelines, the platform provides the visibility and flexibility needed to keep projects on track and stakeholders informed every step of the way.

Obsolescence

In the electrical discipline, keeping track of and maintaining storage of legacy equipment and components is just as important as selecting modern ones. Historically, managing these parts often meant relying on a simple spreadsheet—a method that, while familiar, is prone to version control issues, human error, and limited visibility across teams. Critical information about obsolete or end-of-life components could easily be lost, mismanaged, or siloed within a single department, leaving other teams without the context they need to make informed design decisions.

With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, we can now organize and maintain these lists using integrated lifecycle management tools that go far beyond what a static spreadsheet can provide. These tools track the full lifecycle of every component—from active use to obsolescence—and facilitate the proper identification and replacement of parts across every project, regardless of geographic location. Whether a manufacturer has discontinued a component or simply needs to be phased out in favor of a more modern alternative, lifecycle management ensures that the right information is always available to the right people at the right time, reducing risk and keeping projects moving forward with confidence.

","2026-11-02T06:00:00","
"jpemanuele","JP is a Territory Technical Manager, SOLIDWORKS Electrical, North America.","JP Emanuele","JP","Emanuele
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/b912c9f631d3ff5efc861040cd97bfffee4172def2a914ac71a7f683586420b2?s=96&d=mm&r=g","Avatar","User","NodeWithAuthorToUserConnectionEdge
[],[],"PostToTaxonomy_masteringConnection
46
"dGVybTo5NjMx","Electrical","electrical","/tags/electrical/","Taxonomy_tag","PostToTaxonomy_tagConnection
[55
true
"dGVybTo1Ng==","SOLIDWORKS","solidworks","/products/solidworks/","Taxonomy_product","PostToTaxonomy_productConnectionEdge",[65
"PostToTaxonomy_productConnection
[69,82
"dGVybTo5NzM3","3D CAD","3d-cad","/disciplines/3d-cad/",null
77
"/disciplines/3d-cad","Discipline","Taxonomy_disciplineToDisciplineConnection","Taxonomy_discipline
"dGVybTo5NzI5","/disciplines/electrical/","dGVybTo1OA==
88
"/disciplines/design-engineering/electrical","cG9zdDozNzcz",[92,95
"PostToTaxonomy_disciplineConnectionEdge
false
"PostToTaxonomy_disciplineConnection
"https://blogs.solidworks.com/products/solidworks/a-day-in-the-life-on-the-platform-from-the-perspective-of-an-electrical-engineer/","A Day in the Life on the Platform: From the Perspective of an Electrical Engineer - Blog Solidworks","Backordered parts, late mechanical changes and version-control headaches don't have to derail your day.
