A Day in the Life on the Platform: From the Perspective of a Designer

Kicking off this blog series on how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform benefits all stakeholders involved in ideation, development and production of products. We start with the Designer’s Perspective.

A Day in the Life on the Platform: From the Perspective of a Designer

I began my career in 2005 at a Product Development and Design company in Atlanta, GA. My world was a thrilling mix of designing, developing, and testing everything from intricate medical devices to clever products for inventors and startups, and large-scale consumer goods for major corporations. Many of those designs now sit on store shelves and in homes across the country. Later, I transitioned into bulk powder manufacturing, focusing on developing processes to maximize product quality and yield.

Throughout this journey, one persistent, gnawing problem overshadowed the creative and technical work: file storage and management. In the early days, projects lived on individual work computers. Collaboration meant physically walking to someone’s desk with a USB drive, or worse, sending massive files via email that would inevitably bounce. The risk was terrifying—if a computer failed, years of work could vanish in an instant. We all knew someone who had suffered that loss.

Network storage locations promised improvement but introduced new chaos. Without a systematic approach, files were routinely overwritten or accidentally deleted. The “which version is this?” conversation was a daily ritual. We had offsite backups, but the restoration process was a legend in its own right—tedious, slow, and prohibitively expensive. Our IT needs were constant, and every request was met with resistance and daunting cost projections. I vividly remember trying to advocate for a solution like SOLIDWORKS PDM, only to be stonewalled by management, unwilling to approve the purchase and balk at the perceived infrastructure complexity.

The Cost of Chaos

The challenges I faced weren’t unique. They represent a massive, industry-wide drain on productivity and profit, extending development cycles, missing market windows, and crushing team morale. A 2017 ENGINEERING.com survey of product development professionals found that 32% of teams lacked a formal collaboration solution, and those teams reported significantly lower satisfaction with securing data and gathering feedback.

A Solution That Grows With You

Today, the solution I wished for exists. SOLIDWORKS Design:

  • Simple, Secure, and Backed-Up Storage: Cloud-native storage that requires no extra IT infrastructure, no capital expenditure on servers, and no complex setup. Data is automatically secured and backed up by enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure.
  • Scalability on Your Terms: The platform allows teams to start with powerful core CAD and data management, then adopt advanced features like formal revision management, serialized part numbering, and advanced simulation (FEA/CFD) exactly when they need them, at their own pace.

The platform transforms daily workflow by eliminating the anxiety of data management. Imagine starting your day by opening a single dashboard. All your active projects are there, with real-time notifications showing that a manufacturing engineer down the hall has commented on a tolerance, a quality specialist in another office has approved a material spec, and a simulation analyst in another country has completed a new FEA run. You open the model in SOLIDWORKS Design, and the comments and feedback are available. No emails, no network drives, no stress.

Peace of Mind and Unleashed Innovation

The greatest benefit is peace of mind. The anxiety of losing data, of building the wrong version, of the “single point of failure” on a local hard drive—it all evaporates. There is one source of truth. The Center for Advanced Design has experienced this transformation firsthand. Marc McCauley, Co-founder and Co-owner, states: “The ability to take a product from concept through production all from within the same cloud-based environment is naturally more efficient. With the flexibility of the 3DEXPERIENCE Works tool from inside a web browser, we’ve become a lot more agile.” The company achieved a 60% reduction in design time and 20% cut in product development time.

This security and clarity free up mental bandwidth for what matters most: innovation. When you’re not constantly managing data, you can focus on solving harder problems, exploring more design alternatives, and bringing better products to market faster. In the aviation industry, SmartFlyer leverages the platform’s collaborative capabilities to develop electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, using cloud-based data management to coordinate distributed teams without heavy server investments. Rolf Stuber, CEO, explains: “With the 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions, we create a base from which we unleash our innovative strength… We don’t have to worry about software updates, data mirroring, or data backups, but can fully focus on the development of the Smartflyer.”

Similarly, NanoEcho uses SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to build quality medical devices faster, with the platform’s revision management streamlining regulatory compliance while ensuring data integrity across teams.

In the automotive sector, Vaison Sport speeds extreme motorsport development using cloud PLM services that help them stay ahead of their competition as multiple designers are able to work collaboratively on the same project.

The benefits extend across industries precisely because the fundamental challenge remains the same: managing complex data while enabling seamless collaboration. Vaison Sport’s Matthieu Parent captured this perfectly: “For us, the advantage of the cloud is that it’s secure and offers access to our files wherever we are in the world. We always have our files at hand and with no disruption to the [physical] work in the workshop.”

The Future Ahead

The product development landscape will continue to evolve with AI, generative design, and ever-more complex global supply chains. Basing your processes on a disconnected, file-based system is like trying to win a modern race with a horse and cart. The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform provides the integrated, scalable, and secure foundation necessary not just to compete today, but to innovate and lead tomorrow.

Looking back at my career, I see the countless hours lost to preventable problems. Today, I see a different path for engineers and designers. It starts with a platform that manages the data, so you can focus on the dream.
