<![CDATA[
This Memorial Day Weekend in the United States we honor our military veterans that have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Digital Camera

This Memorial Day weekend brings thousands to the Boston Common at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument to see the 37,000 US flags, provided by the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund. The Flag Garden is planted in memory of Massachusetts service men and women who gave their lives in defending our country from the Revolutionary War to the present. The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund (MMHF) is officially MMHF at Home Base, permanently cementing the long-standing partnership between Home Base and MMHF.

For over 15 years, SOLIDWORKS Edu team has provided the SOLIDWORKS Military Veterans Program (MVP) to US and Canadian Veterans. We also support Veterans in our Start-up program and manufacturing training organizations like Workshops for Warriors. MySolidWorks provides free online training to Veterans. MakebyMe is a free DIY software application for wood working. The SOLIDWORKS User Group Community and SOLIDWORKS Forum are great places for Veterans to learn more about SOLIDWORKS programs.

<![CDATA[ Wildlife crime continues to devastate Africa’s efforts to protect rhinos and other endangered wildlife. The Eye Above NPC, inspired by the Tsonga phrase “Tihlo Henhla” meaning “Eye Above,” reflects their core mission: to revolutionize conservation efforts across Southern Africa by deploying cutting-edge drone technology in the harsh, demanding environments where endangered wildlife needs it most.Through the SOLIDWORKS for Good program, Dassault Systèmes, support from the SOLIDWORKS team, SOLIDWORKS Reseller MECAD SA, founder Robert Miller and the Eye Above are making a difference in the environment and animal preservation. With innovative drone technology, AI programming and training, the Eye Above is also creating skilled jobs in rural communities.I was fortunate to hear from Robert on how the SOLIDWORKS for Good program is making a difference in both his projects and designs. Robert stated, “On the project related side, we plan to put 15 of these Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into service but we will need funding support to build them and we need the support of the public and corporations to make this happen. On the design side, I wish that people would dare to be different, break the rules, try new things and don’t stick to what everyone else does! SOLIDWORKS lets you design what your imagination can conjure up and then lets you test it. This aircraft is radically different to most fixed-wing VTOLs and given that we have a tiny budget, we had to trust SOLIDWORKS to simulate every aspect of the design before committing to building anything and SOLIDWORKS hasn’t let us down.”Robert praised the efforts of SOLIDWORKS experts, Stephane Bonnamour, Omar Zohni, Peter Kjellbotn, Andrew Barnes, Suchit Jain and Rudolf van den Berg and the MECAD team for volunteering their guidance to develop advanced designs, flow and structural simulations. This summer, the Eye Above has partnered with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWF) and International Crane Foundation (ICF) with a focus to protect cranes and their critical habitats.Another drone deployment will occur with Greater Kruger Landscape. This project covers the vast landscape of Kruger National Park and protected lands in South Africa. To find out more about the Eye Above, their projects, fundraising campaigns, partnership, and volunteer opportunities, go here,Robert went on to say, “I am not one for believing in fate or aligned stars but when I was thinking how to describe this project all I could think of was that ‘this project is a rare convergence of brilliance, where countless incredible people, with perfect timing, came together in an almost cosmic alignment, creating the unstoppable momentum that ensured its success.”‘The Eye Above has sought help in many areas and have often been turned down, but in every case when the right company did come along it had incredible people like you (the SOLIDWORKS/MECAD team). The same happened with HP Additive Manufacturing Solutions who have some amazing people and in fact the same is also true for every one of our other partners, EWT, ICF, SONY, Hitec Group USA, CubePilot, Ardupilot, AOC, Flying Robot, Wham Bam Systems.Robert concluded, “This has truly turned into “A revolutionary drone, made unstoppable by the coalition it unites to protect our wildlife.”Thank you Robert for sharing your story with the SOLIDWORKS Community and developing innovative drone technology for critical conservation wildlife efforts in Africa. Thank you SOLIDWORKS team for volunteering to assist the Eye Above.Design well. Marie ]]>

<![CDATA[ This week’s blog is written by my colleague, Valerie Lecolle, after her visit to KXKM near Lyon, France.KompleX KapharnaüM (KXKM) is a 20-years old multidisciplinary arts organization based in Vaulx-En-Velin France, known for its innovative and boundary-pushing performances that blend various art forms such as theater, music, visual arts, and technology. KXKM aims to create immersive experiences that challenge perceptions and ignite the imagination. With a focus on experimentation and collaboration, KXKM’s productions often feature a mix of live performances, interactive installations, and digital elements, inviting audiences to engage with art in new and unexpected ways. Through its diverse range of projects and performances, KXKM continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art and redefine the possibilities of interdisciplinary collaboration, even at a worldwide level.SOLIDWORKS For GoodAs part of our SOLIDWORKS For Good program, we are providing free SOLIDWORKS licenses to non-profit and humanitarian organizations, and KXKM is part of them, using SOLIDWORKS for 5 years in order to create the structures that serve as the basis for the projects they propose.KXKM UniverseSimon Zerbib, scenographer, welcomed us and guided us in the KXKM universe. Simon’s journey with SOLIDWORKS began during his student years at secondary school in Villeurbanne back in 1998, forging a strong connection to the software that continues to shape his work at KXKM today.“SOLIDWORKS is a highly valued tool at KXKM as it saves us a considerable amount of time and fosters effective interaction and collaboration among our various departments. SOLIDWORKS is a tool serving our versatile and multifaceted artistic creations ” he said.Together with Pierre Duforeau, Artistic Director, he showed and explained us their two different kinds of projects they are working on: dedicated projects and long-term projects.Pierre Duforeau and Simon ZerbibTheir artistic creations are born from a rich tapestry of documentary materials, including videos, sounds, archives, words, and atmospheres, which are meticulously collected or captured by the artists themselves. Operating at the crossroads of multiple art forms, they skillfully blend these elements based on the unique requirements of each project and its contextual backdrop. Embracing the immersive potential of public spaces, all their performances unfold outdoors, leveraging the streets, squares, and buildings to craft distinctive and evocative settings for their artistic expression.Artistic VisionIn their pursuit of innovation, they continually explore new modes of performance, often opting for mobile setups that allow them to seamlessly navigate various environments. Supported by a dedicated team of technicians and engineers, they custom-build specialized tools and structures tailored to their artistic vision, enabling flexibility and adaptability to meet the demands of different venues and artistic endeavors. Structures are designed to be modular, allowing for swift dismantling and reassembly to accommodate evolving creative needs and preferences. Their creative endeavors encompass two primary categories:
Touring shows, meticulously reimagined for each new performance space, ensuring a seamless integration with the surroundings like the Migration project with reusable roofing modules. The goal here was to ensure coverage and waterproofing on demountable structures.

Site-specific projects, commissioned to resonate with specific areas, neighborhoods, or locales, offering bespoke experiences deeply rooted in their respective environments like the CuttingGardens. CuttingGardens is a global conference on innovative M/EEG data analysis methods. It occurs in multiple locations worldwide, featuring a unified global program broadcasted to all, along with tailored local programs including talks, tutorials, posters, and social events.
A big thank you to KXKM and its entire team for enabling the creation of synergies between artistic concepts and the public, and for reestablishing dialogue to evoke emotions.Thank you Valerie for sharing KXKM’s story with the SOLIDWORKS Community.Design well, Marie ]]>

<![CDATA[ You do not have to be a farmer’s daughter to understand the significance of a tractor on a small farm. I learned this lesson when I was a little girl with my parents and grandparents, along with the importance of supporting the small farmer resonates with me today.I am fortunate to introduce you to Horace Clemmons, a man with a vision for all farmers to afford a tractor. The tractor, designed in SOLIDWORKS, uses locally produced components – no matter where you are in the world and an open source model. For Horace, it is not a tractor, but a new way of thinking. And where is Horace making a difference? Look at Zimbabwe, Uganda and Cuba to start. Working with the local engineering universities – “Made in Africa” has a new definition.Horace uses locally sourced common components, recycled components, and assembled components close to home at a fair, affordable price for the small farmer.Thank you Edward Randolph for sharing your beautiful SOLIDWORKS models and drawings with the open source tractor community. For more information on this program, please visit Ronnie Tractors.Design well. Marie ]]>

<![CDATA[ 3DEXPERIENCE World 2022. February 7-9, will highlight many aspects of the SOLIDWORKS community. The SOLIDWORKS for Good program supports not-for-profit organizations, providing SOLIDWORKS community awareness and software tools to help educate others and make our world better. The Seashore Trolley MuseumOur newest organization is the Seashore Trolley Museum of Kennebunkport, Maine. The Seashore Trolley Museum educates the world about the history of transit. The 1912 Portland-Lewiston Interurban Narcissus, is currently being restored. SOLIDWORKS software is assisting project manager Ernie Eaton and his team in this award-winning restoration. Their use of SOLIDWORKS Visualize produces such life-like results, you can almost hear the bell ring.Original components, such as the truck mounting bracket from Car 41, are designed in SOLIDWORKS and then CNC routed.Educators – the Seashore Trolley Museum also has great resources for teaching and learning. We are not able to showcase the Seashore Trolley Museum this year, but you can visit them in Maine for a great vacation. The Magic WheelchairOur partnership with the Magic Wheelchair organization continues to grow. Now the DASSAULT SYSTEMES Foundation, our employees, and the 3DEXPERIENCE Works software tools, support the amazing custom wheelchair builds for kiddos – right out of our 3DEXPERIENCE Fab Lab in Waltham, MA. Thank you to our VARs and SOLIDWORKS community that also supports these epic builds. You can learn more about the Magic Wheelchair from the 3DEXPERIENCE World 2022 Break out session “Building Magic for Super Heroes in Wheelchairs”, Wednesday February 9.LN4 Giving a Helping HandSOLIDWORKS for Good supports the LN4 organization, Giving a Helping Hand, where designers from our community and SOLIDWORKS R&D engineers help to improve and implement changes to free hand prosthetics for those in need. This year at 3DEXPERIENCE World, General Session, Day 3, Suchit Jain will announce a new competition for students and LN4 using our SOLIDWORKS cloud apps.Danielle Boyer and The Steam ConnectionThe STEAMConnection organization is on a mission to make technology education for youth with the power of robotics. Danielle Boyer, Founder and CEO, is a young Indigenous (Ojibwe – Sault Ste Marie Tribe) robotics inventor, author, activist, and advocate for youth who has been teaching kids since she was ten years old. Danielle creates equitable and innovative learning solutions for minority youths with robots that she designs, manufacturers, and gives away for free. With tools like SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids and help from our SOLIDWORKS User Groups and VARs, we look forward in seeing new projects in 2022..We hope you can participate in 3DEXPERIENCE World and learn about SOLIDWORKS for Good. ]]>

<![CDATA[ 3DEXPERIENCE World is the best event to learn more about SOLIDWORKS, explore new technology, and get inspired by our community of designers, engineers, educators and students. For 17 years, I went to SOLIDWORKS World, as a customer, user group leader, partner, educator, and employee. This is my first 3DEXPERIENCE World to learn more about SOLIDWORKS, more about cloud-based software applications (Apps), and have fun with our growing community. With my teammates, we just call it “World”.Learning. At World, there are more SOLIDWORKS breakout sessions than last year. These sessions include the latest SOLIDWORKS enhancements, best practices to improve your skills, and prepare for a SOLIDWORKS Certification exam (418K Certified SOLIDWORKS Users). I remember the Sketch Tips and Tricks session from my first user group meeting. I can’t wait to learn more about the 2020 features.SOLIDWORKS 2020 runs on your Windows desktop. Model mania will challenge the best designers at World using SOLIDWORKS in lightning speed. Over 20 years, SOLIDWORKS features have changed allowing engineers to get their work done faster. As technology changes, additional functionality related to SOLIDWORKS users must expand and enhance the product design process. That is where the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and advancement in manufacturing technology come in.At world, there are sessions on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and product development Apps related to SOLIDWORKS. My 2020 resolution is to learn more about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. So this past month, I reviewed the World event program and want to share with you what I have learned – before you go to Nashville, TN, USA, February 9-12, 2020. If you cannot get to Nashville, you can catch live streaming at Live.SolidWorks.com.Here are some helpful key definitions.3DEXPERIENCE World 2020 is an event for designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, researchers, educators, and students to learn, innovate, and celebrate together. Building on the legacy of SOLIDWORKS World, it’s the source for new innovation that centers around SOLIDWORKS and its partners. It’s also about the software applications, relevant to the SOLIDWORKS user, with Dassault Systèmes technologies.3DEXPERIENCE platform is a business technology platform developed by Dassault Systèmes. The platform is both a cloud-based innovation platform and a transaction platform.3DEXPERIENCE Apps are software applications based on Dassault Systèmes technologies. Our software brands CATIA, DELMIA, SOLIDWORKS, SIMULIA, ENOVIA, NETVIBES and EXALEAD are part of the Dassault Systèmes portfolio.3DEXPERIENCE WORKS portfolio is a cloud-based collaborative, product development environment, that unites an entire organization from design and manufacturing to service and marketing. Apps come from SOLIDWORKS, DELMIAWorks, SIMULIAWorks, ENOVIAWorks and more.3DEXPERIENCE Roles are a collection of related software Apps. My favorite Apps are xDesign and xShape. You can learn more about these Apps, the platform, and cloud technology at World. You can also learn more about new Apps at MySolidWorks.com Training.Inspiration. What makes the World experience so uplifting is the human aspect of what gathers us together as engineers and designers. These inspirational stories provide lasting memories for years to come.World features Dean Kamen, inventor, entrepreneur, STEM advocate, and founder of FIRST and FIRST Global, my hero. There are more inspirational speakers outlined here.In the Playground Edu area, you can speak with student teams from, Tennessee Tech FSAE and Baja SAE, Louisiana Tech Shell Eco-marathon, University of Tennessee FSAE, and Dripping Spring HS (Texas) IEEE RC 4×4.You can also talk with researchers from Vanderbilt University developing a submarine living space in real time on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with other students from India and France.Community. Our community is an inspiration at World! Stop by the Playground 3DEXPERIENCE for Good area to see Magic Wheelchair, LN4 prosthetic hands, and Danielle Boyer, Every Kids Gets a Robot. And don’t forget this is a Users Group meeting. There are special meetings with SOLIDWORKS User Group leaders on Wednesday morning.Start-ups. Eight start-ups pitch for a chance at World. See the preliminaries on Monday night and the finals Wednesday at General Session, You can vote for your favorite too.Fun. Nashville is Music City! On Tuesday night it’s all about Bash on Broadway. Bring a jacket and a smile from a really great time.I will be with students and educators in the Playground EDU Area Sunday night, Feb 10, 6 pm – 8pm. Stop by and say hello. See you at World! <![CDATA[ Fifteen years ago, FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team Steampunk 1577 started the FRC revolution in Israel. One of the founding Israeli FIRST teams, they are now leaders in their region, with over 150 alumni. Steampunk 1577 hails from the city of Ra’anana, and their mission is to impact people who were not previously interested in STEM, and help them grow. They are one of the most influential FIRST teams in Israel, both with their robots and their community outreach projects. One of those projects, of which the team is incredibly proud, is their creation of a low-cost electric wheelchair kit, designed in SOLIDWORKS.“The municipal Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team trained in the sports hall at our high school, Avid High School,” explained team member Eden Lip. “The team captain was the daughter of our mentor at the time. Through that relationship, we were able to build a physical and emotional connection with the basketball team.” Expanding on their volunteer work with Yad Sarah, the largest volunteer organization in Israel, Steampunk 1577 began volunteering with the wheelchair team. The high school students learned more about the women, what it felt like to use a wheelchair, and how they lived with different disabilities. The students were surprised to discover how expensive a motorized wheelchair costs—over ₪10,000, or around $2,800. For most people, particularly those with certain disabilities, the easier-to-use motorized wheelchair was simply unaffordable. But when a problem like that is presented to an enthusiastic and engaged robotics team like Steampunk 1577, a solution will soon be found. And that’s exactly what they did.“Thanks to the knowledge we gained through FIRST, our robotics studies, and SOLIDWORKS, we developed a low-cost motorized wheelchair kit, which is accessible to everyone, everywhere,” said Eden. The wheelchair kit is made of parts found in the standard FIRST Robotics Competition Kit of Parts (KOP), along with 3D printed parts. The kit connects to a standard, manual wheelchair, the type many people have to rent. But with Steampunk 1577’s design, no harm is done to the chair, and it can still bend fully and maintain its locking system. Adding the parts to a standard wheelchair is a simple way to make the chair motorized and mobile. And the kit is a fraction of the cost of a motorized wheelchair—only ₪500, or around $143, a nearly 85% price difference.Following their own mission and the FIRST core value of impacting and improving the world around them, Steampunk 1577 decided to make their wheelchair kit open source. “We believe that technology should be accessible to anyone around the world, especially when it comes to medical matters,” Eden explained. “Our kit can help a lot of people around the world who need an electric wheelchair but can’t handle the high cost. We want to be sure that everyone who needs it can get it.”Anyone who wants to motorize a standard wheelchair can visit Steampunk 1577’s website, download the files, print the pieces, and assemble their kit using the easy to understand guide. After completing their kit, Steampunk 1577 reached out to teams around the world with invitations to join their “low-cost electric wheelchair factory.” Teams from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and other countries are all part of the electric wheelchair journey.Steampunk 1577 also extended their reach when their electric wheelchair kit was featured in the Israeli media. The team and their kit could be seen on morning shows and read about in newspapers. They were even invited to present their project to the Israeli Parliament Science Committee on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. With this wider exposure, Steampunk 1577 developed relationships with hospitals and organizations and were able to supply them with low-cost motorized wheelchairs, and gain wisdom from professional caregivers and doctors. “We are always happy to develop partnerships that help us reach our goal,” explained Eden, “and we would like to ask anyone who can help to contact us.”“Our electronic wheelchair program would not have been possible without SOLIDWORKS,” Eden said. Everything in the kit, from the prototypes to the final product, was created in SOLIDWORKS. And Steampunk 1577 continues to use it now as they upgrade parts and features. Switching from a different CAD program a few years ago, Steampunk 1577’s design team found SOLIDWORKS’ UI and functions incredibly easy to learn and use, and feel that the software helped them move forward as a team. And it’s not just their mechanical design team: Steampunk 1577’s electronics team also uses SOLIDWORKS to design and create their PCBs, and the team holds yearly CAD seminars so other teams and students can learn from their experience. And when building both their FRC robot and the parts for their electric wheelchair, they do everything in their own in-house workshop, using SOLIDWORKS SolidCAM for all their CNC machining. Many team members have SOLIDWORKS Certifications and in 2020, the team hopes to be a fully sponsored SOLIDWORKS team. “SOLIDWORKS opened a new world for us,” Eden said. “A digital world where we could create everything we need to succeed.”Steampunk 1577 continues to succeed. They were subdivision finalists in the Tesla group at the 2019 FIRST World Championships in Detroit, and won the Innovation and Control Award sponsored by Rockwell Automation. They were invited on stage at SOLIDWORKS reseller Systematics’ annual conference for the SOLIDWORKS 2020 launch. And they continue to grow their skills with SOLIDWORKS and develop and improve their kit, both in its performance and its cost. With their mission to positively impact both local and global communities and teach others to love STEM, Steampunk 1577 has already changed the world.Thank you to Eden Lip and the team members and mentors of Steampunk 1577.
