<![CDATA[ Guest author: Bonny Cao, Mainstream innovation, SOLIDWORKS EDU Ecosystem Senior SpecialistInspire, Empower, TransformiSTEAM Academy, a Burlington, MA-based non-profit dedicated to advancing STEAM education, partnered with Vinci STEAM Edu hosted the Massachusetts Robotics State Championship on March 15, 2025, at Lexington High School. The event brought together over 500 students, attendees, and media to celebrate robotics excellence. The winning teams will go to global robotics competitions. The event provided valuable opportunities for industry connections, media exposure, and hands-on STEM experiences, making it an unforgettable celebration of innovation and learning.Empowering K-12 Education and STEM Innovation with SOLIDWORKS Education & SponsorshipSOLIDWORKS was invited as the major sponsor and was the only established professional CAD provider selected to participate in the event. We were asked to showcase solutions, products, and programs that support and benefit K–12 students and educators. Our active participation, through the following engagement activities, had a meaningful impact by connecting with students, educators, and robotics experts to:
Demonstrate our solutions and product options to support K–12 and STEM education, as well as student competition teams.
Gather valuable feedback from students, educators, team coaches, and robotics experts.
Build connections with industry professionals and leaders in the STEM community.
Promote SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids (SWA4K) to ensure our products and services continue as an ongoing program.
Northeastern University Robotics Team Inspires Future Engineers with SOLIDWORKSStudents from the Northeastern University Robotics Team attended the event to showcase their Drone and VEX projects, inspiring young students by demonstrating how the skills they develop can carry over into their college studies. They also shared how they use SOLIDWORKS to design critical components of their drone model, highlighting the software’s role in their engineering and design process. Farhad and Cassey shared their experiences with SOLIDWORKS. Cassey has already earned his CSWA certification. Although Fiona majors in Computer Science, she learned SOLIDWORKS for it is a valuable skill in robotic design. Questions from Coaches, Educators, Students and ParentsMost of Saturday was spent answering questions from coaches, educators, students and parents about SOLIDWORKS and our SOLIDWORKS Cloud apps that run on Chrome books and Macs. Coaches were happy they could apply for SOLIDWORKS Student sponsorship for their teams, especially as their designs are getting more complex, parents of home-school children learned about our SOLIDWORKS Student Edition for them to introduce CAD and engineering topics at home. But the greatest comment of the day was from a shy 12-year-old boy who stated, “How can I get a SOLIDWORKS license?”His mom explained that he began exploring 3D modeling with our free SOLIDWORKS App for Kids, which sparked his love for CAD. He even stopped his music lessons to focus on it. To encourage him, his parents bought him a 3D printer.ReflectionSOLIDWORKS EDU continues to support STEM Education organizations and their students with great software tools like SOLIDWORKS CAD for PC (Windows Desktop), SOLIDWORKS xDesign (100% cloud browser-based) and SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids (browser-based).Marie’s CommentsFor kids ages 4-14 try out free SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids here. For SOLIDWORKS Student Team sponsorship, all ages, apply here.Thank you iSTEAM Academy, for hosting this event. Thank you to our partner Mass Robotics, for their STEM outreach and support of our SOLIDWORKS Startup program. And thank you Bonny Cao and SOLIDWORKS EDU for supporting this event.Design well. Marie ]]>

<![CDATA[ SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids is a free web-browser creative tool that kids age 4-14 use to design 3D models, decorate, and 3D Print. SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids Classroom is a special app just for educators to safely develop lessons for their students. In Japan, Professor Naruse of Fukushima Prefectural Techno Academy Hama, developed a great project to combine Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning with history and culture.“Akabeko”, the red cow, comes from a legend that a cow helped to build the Enzoji Temple in the Aizu region ~807. The cow led the other animals, working tirelessly, until the temple was complete. The grateful people erected statues of the cow in the temple grounds. Akabeko is a symbol of good fortune and health.Professor Naruse started with geometry basics to develop the body of the cow. Although most students never used a mouse or computer, they quickly grasped the concepts of developing the 3D model. Then can time to decorate and have fun with color and stickers.Next came a conversation about manufacturing technology. Professor Naruse introduced the concept of 3D Printing. Every student got to print their own model and take it home as a great souvenir. But it doesn’t end with this lesson. Students can use SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids at home on their own to create their own models and have fun.Thank you Professor Naruse, Asubito Fukushima, my colleague Junko Arai and the SOLIDWORKS Japan team for inspiring the next generation of designers.Educators! we offer a SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids Highlight Newsletter so don’t forget to sign up on the SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids Website. Check out the cool ideas from other teachers.Design well, Marie. ]]>

<![CDATA[ Rich Wells, Harding University, Searcy, Arkansas, USA is teaching design, engineering and analysis courses to his students. His students are using SOLIDWORKS. But early this summer, Rich and three of his colleagues put together the “Robots and Rockets” Summer Camp for kids in grades 4-8 to have fun learning about with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects.Campers got to work on:1. Dissection (Fish and Cow Eyeball)
2. Lego Mindstorms Robots
3. 3D Printing / 3D Design
4. Laser CuttingThe 3D Printing and 3D Design activity centered around SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids. SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids software tools, Shape-It and Style-It allowed students to learn about 3D Design and Modeling. The Print-It app allowed these campers to see their creations and learn about 3D Printing technology.Rich used the SOLIDWORKS Apps for Kids Classroom App to manage the students’ assignments/work in the class.Robots and Rockets camp was so successful last year – the community asked for more. So Rich and team set the cap, but 52 students signed up. The solution – run two sections. We are fortunate to have Rich as a member of the SOLIDWORKS Community. This is his “second career” and brings to students, of all ages, a wealth of engineering knowledge from General Motors and the original EV1. Yes, there was an electrical vehicle before most of my students were born ~1996 – 1999.Rich is a role model to his students and the community as a leader for medical missions to Central America.Rich – thank you, your colleagues and Harding University for hosting this great summer camp. Thank you too for sharing with the SOLIDWORKS Community.Design well, Marie ]]>
