The following blog is co-written by my colleague Junko Arai, SOLIDWORKS EDU Senior Sales Specialist Japan.Formula SAE Japan (FSAEJ), started in 2003, is an opportunity for students to develop various skills involved with object creation and as training for those who will one day play critical roles in the future of the automotive industry. The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc. unites students, engineers and industry professionals by the common passion of automotive research. SAE Japan consists of more than 50,000 individual members and over 500 corporate members.Dassault Systèmes and SOLIDWORKS EDU team support these students to design, produce and race a vehicle by providing free software tools through the SOLIDWORKS Student Team Sponsorship program. Before the event, SOLIDWORKS Japan Industry Process Consultants (IPC) engineers provide training sessions to FSAEJ students to develop the necessary skills in SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for competition and their future careers. We are happy to share the FSAEJ 2025 results with the SOLIDWORKS Community. We applaud the efforts of Nagoya University FSAEJ team that placed first overall in FSAEJ EV. Using SOLIDWORKS, these future engineers are well on the way to being prepared to work in the transportation industry as 90% of the EV automotive industry uses Dassault Systèmes technology.Nagoya University Formula Team FEM once again recaptured first place in the EV category, achieving back-to-back victories and successfully rebuilding their team as an EV powerhouse. The team broke the acceleration record and outperformed all ICV teams in autocross. Next year, they will continue to work towards their goal, to ‘break records in the dynamic events’ and demonstrate the speed of EV vehicles, even against ICV teams. The SOLIDWORKS community will be there to cheer you on.Congratulations to Doshisha University Racing that successfully completed the endurance race and achieved single-digit rankings in all events except efficiency, enabling the team to reach the goal of 2nd place overall in ICV. The team stated, “Our concept is ‘fun to drive’, and we develop each formula car with the goal of creating a fast yet easy-to-handle car that is highly reliable and durable.”Years ago, Osaka University presented at SOLIDWORKS World Japan. (Marie: I was honored to sit in their FSAEJ vehicle), Osaka University Formula Team is leading the way in combining SOLIDWORKS with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform technology to develop their race car in the ICV category. For over a decade, SOLIDWORKS Japan has supported FSAEJ and its students. From Hokkaido University in northern Japan to Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT) in the southern Japan, to thousands of students in between, we look forward in sharing more student stories with our SOLIDWORKS community.Thank you Junko and the SOLIDWORKS Japan team for your support.Design well. Marie

We say, “SOLIDWORKS is Everywhere!” You never know where you will meet SOLIDWORKS users. My colleague, Matthew Hall took a plane to from Dallas to Boston and then took a bus to the University of Vermont campus to meet his wife for a ride home. Walking through the halls, Matthew met a student coming out of a random door and asked the question, “Do you use SOLIDWORKS?” Our favorite answer, “Yes, the team does!”That team is the University of Vermont Alternative Energy Racing Organization (UVM-AERO) that is preparing for Formula Hybrid Electric 2024 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. From Matthew’s simple encounter, I was fortunate to interview mechanical engineering student and battery lead, Caroline Johnson about her journey to UVM and the team’s evolution to compete at Formula Hybrid Electric April April 29 – May 2, 2024..In high school, Caroline didn’t know much about engineering and loved history – but there were no jobs majoring in history. She attended a “Women in Math” event for high school girls at Penn State – Berks near her hometown. She toured UVM campus and decided to try General Engineering. Later she switched to Mechanical Engineering.Caroline is loving UVM, the campus in northern Vermont, and her AERO team. She joined the team freshman year and in the spring got small projects to work on. She invested in the club and became project lead for the paneling outside of car. Now she is the battery pack project lead – a very important job for an electric vehicle. Caroline learned SOLIDWORKS in her engineering courses at UVM. Learning SOLIDWORKS helped Caroline get her engineering internship for the summer. The club also hosts SOLIDWORKS – based training for its members too. Their mascot, Bessie can be seen on campus and in the community – promoting their team and engineering skills. Caroline stated, “SOLIDWORKS is easy to use. I’m happy UVM decided to use SOLIDWORKS. It really prepares us to use in school and in industry.ForThe UVM-AERO team also uses SOLIDWORKS Electrical and SOLIDWORKS Simulation to help in the design. There multi-discipline team is comprised of mechanical, electrical, computer science, civil, environmental, engineering science, forestry, and data science.I asked Caroline about a forestry major on the team and she said, anyone can join. Members can learn hands-on skills in machining and welding too.Over 18 years, I have seen Formula Hybrid Electric grow to a challenging international event. Founded and run by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, the Formula Hybrid+Electric is an interdisciplinary design and engineering challenge for undergraduate and graduate university students. Students collaboratively design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid racecar and compete in a series of events. The competition is part of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Design Series and is regarded as the most complex and dynamic of the series. We wish University of Vermont Alternative Energy Racing Organization (UVM-AERO) and all the teams participating in Formula Hybrid Electric a successful event. Thank you Caroline and Matthew Hall for sharing with the SOLIDWORKS Community.Design well. Marie

Engineers. Designers. Manufacturers. No matter where in the world, we hear from our commercial clients that they need more graduates with SOLIDWORKS and technical skills.I am happy to interview my colleague, Andre Kouyoumdjian, after a personal trip to Armenia. Andre got to visit with our SOLIDWORKS value added reseller, EngineerX and congratulate his personal family friend, Vahe Nigoghosian. Vahe put in years of sweat and hard work to develop a company and get this amazing achievement accomplished – the first SOLIDWORKS Reseller in Armenia.Andre has traveled to Armenia 3 times. In 2021 he helped establish the first ever SOLIDWORKS User Group (SWUG) in Armenia. In 2022, he met with all the university and higher education deans to establish rapport. And last month he helped with the EngineerX reseller launch event.Ambassadors from multiple countries (or representation if the actual ambassador was not in the country), deans from the universities, CEO’s from major Armenian companies and people from the Armenian government attended the launch event.EngineerX is now the first Armenian owned and operated SOLIDWORKS reseller in Armenia. Andre stated, “For some, this might not seem like a big deal, but for others, they realize how crucial representation like this will be, to put Armenia back on the map in the global stage of engineering.”Although a small country, Armenia’s history is rich in culture, science and mathematics. Many inventions from Armenians have changed the world.Andre started his career at SOLIDWORKS at age 18 working out of the Concord, MA office. For 23 years he has been a diehard fan of what SOLIDWORKS stands for and knows how impressive the SOLIDWORKS User Community is. He has had the pleasure of working with and alongside some of the most innovative companies in the world, using our tools to make humanity a better place. And the connection? Andre grew up in an Armenian household, his first language was Armenian, even though his family lived in America. He went to an Armenian Catholic school in Lexington, MA and from the day he was born, he had an image of Armenia in his head and never thought he would visit the country where his mother was from.In 2021, events changed and Andre visited Armenia. He fell in love with the country of his heritage. His friend Vahe had established an engineering services business in Armenia. Andre met with the the EngineerX team and knew the potential was limitless. So with that visit, began a journey, to help establish the first ever SOLIDWORKS reseller in Armenia and to help grow the educational path and support Armenia’s elite engineering talent.Andre couldn’t be prouder of the work that EngineerX team has done to make this dream become a reality, but there is more work to do.Andre stated, “We can certainly enjoy this achievement for today, but tomorrow is around the corner. The entire EngineerX team has a game plan, investing time and money to build something that will surely grab the attention of the engineering world for years to come.”Introducing EngineerX EduEngineerX Edu works to develop young engineering talent in Armenia. The team has partnered with the best educational institutions to help provide guidance, training, and internships. Two times a year, EngineerX brings in a new team of interns to help get ready for the global engineering workforce. They provide students with training and give them the chance to collaborate with the most senior engineers on current projects. After the SOLIDWORKS reseller launch event in Armenia, Andre and Vahe got an opportunity to talk about business and education on an Armenian morning TV show. Our newest SOLIDWORKS Reseller believes the future of engineering in Armenia and across the world, is in the minds of its children and young adults today. EngineerX wants to do whatever is in its power to help foster that enthusiasm and propel students into the global market.Thank you Andre and Vahe for supporting our SOLIDWORKS User Community and Engineering Students in Armenia.Design well Marie

Formula Hybrid + Electric is one of the most challenging competitions in the SAE collegiate circuit. Requiring multidisciplinary student teams in mechanical, electrical, systems, chemical, robotics engineering and computer science, the event tests the design, performance, and durability of a competition vehicle with strict rules. In addition, students must present to industry judges on their drivetrain innovation and vehicle efficiency.Founded and run by the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth since 2006, Formula Hybrid took place last week at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. Compared to Michigan Speedway, the track brings another obstacle to the competition. There is a steep incline during the endurance laps – challenging the best electric motors. This year it rained everyday. But students used teamwork to persevere through each event.WPI Formula Electric Team Keeping the Driver and Car DryThank you Formula Hybrid + Electric organizers for capturing this moment of the WPI Formula Electric team. Always protect the driver and the vehicle, even in the rain.Purdue University Formula Electric TeamStudents got to prepare in the garage and take shelter.WPI Formula Electric Passes Tech InspectionStudents must go through a series of safety tests to pass Tech Inspection and get “the sticker”.Northeastern University Formula Electric on Tilt TableTilt Table, Student sits in the vehicle and the table is rotated to 45 and 60 degrees.WPI Formula Electric Tallest Driver in EgressDriver Egress – get out of the vehicle in under 5 seconds and land on two feet.WPI Formula Electric Team with JudgesStudents participate in static events, speaking to judges about their designs and improvements.WPI Formula Electric Ready for AccelerationThere are also dynamic events that tests the vehicle’s maneuverability and performance.University of Waterloo Toolbox at Formula Electric + HybridMy favorite toolbox was from the University of Waterloo, Canada. This team has the biggest SOLIDWORKS Sticker.WPI Formula Electric Advisor and Alum Jessica BabcockOnce you are involved in a Formula team it remains in your blood. Thank you Jessica Babcock, WPI alum for the visit. Former graduates come to support their team. As WPI is my alum and my husband, David is co-advisor with Professor William Michalson, I got to follow the team every day and night. I have been following the WPI Formula Electric team closely for the past three years.WPI Formula Hybrid + Electric Third Place Overall 2023Congratulations WPI Formula Electric for winning 3rd place overall, along with the IEEE Advanced Technology award (2nd year in a row) and the Testing award.University of Toronto Formula ElectricCongratulations to the University of Toronto for winning the event. We wish you the best at Formula Electric Michigan.Congratulations too, Massachusetts Institute of Technology #Motorsports for winning Virtual Racing Challenge. The Formula Hybrid + Electric event wouldn’t be complete without cheering on the other teams who have accomplished so much. Student Teams work all year long to prepare for grueling competitions. Designs are perfected over years for the ultimate machine. Long before the students take to the track, they design, analyze, and then re-design/re-test their components and vehicles.I was fortunate to interview TEAM Eta, a Shell Eco Marathon team from Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU), in Mumbai, India.Team Eta – MAHIL – 2019 Prototype Vehicle, achieved 268.7 kmpl (kilometers/liter) on petrol.SOLIDWORKS helped get uniformity in the Aerodynamic design of the vehicle, resulting in extraordinary achievements. The name Mahil means one who progresses! Team Eta achieved multiple first place wins in Asia – earning them 1st in Asia ranking and 12th in global rankings in Shell Eco-Marathon.We are fortunate that Team Eta shared their designs with the SOLIDWORKS community. I asked Team Eta to highlight some of their achievements.1) ROLLING FRICTION BASED SHAFT DRIVE – Using Extensive modelling features, the drivetrain team successfully designed a rolling friction based driveshaft system, which is more energy efficient than conventional sliding friction based gear train.2) CONTINUOUS VARIABLE CHAIN TRANSMISSION: SOLIDWORKS tools and a variety of features helped us bring out creativity and innovative ideas on the design platform efficiently. SOLIDWORKS makes our work easier with ease in creation of such complex objects in a short time periods.4)NACA DUCT AEROFOIL: Implementing ideas in SOLIDWORKS has always created great outcomes in designing. The NACA Duct is one of such design outcomes with many simulation tests in SOLIDWORKS Simulation.5)TWO SPEED GEAR TRAIN: The motion analysis tool in SOLIDWORKS, used for the motion study of the depicted gear train, produces a smooth and realistic output with simple and effortless editing6) DOG ENGAGER MECHANISM: Visualization, analysis and simulation of simple to complex systems is made easier and better with SOLIDWORKS. The system illustrated above for such outcome is a Dog engager mechanismMy interview would not be complete without asking Team Eta more about their team.Marie: Tell me something about your team, where are you from, how many members, school name, and your advisor.Team Eta: We are Team Eta, the official Super Mileage team of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai India. We are a student team of 32 members who are passionate about creating a fuel-efficient prototype vehicle that covers great distances within a given amount of fuel. The guidance and inspiration that drives us, comes from our beloved Faculty Advisor Dr. Ajay Gangrade. Our team manager Mr. Yuvraj Dalvi and co-manager Mr. Aman Pandit have been the backbone of our team, guiding us through 2020-21 helping us achieve a great feat in the year 2020 and 2021. Our team name is Eta which also happens to be the greek letter to denote efficiency. Recently we won a hattrick victory in one season of Shell Eco Marathon 2021. We came 1st in Asia in 3 competitions: Pitch the Future, Virtual Tech Inspection and Road to 2050 of Shell Eco Marathon 2021 Program.Marie: What competitions do you compete in? Link to competition. Is it regional, national or global?Team Eta: We take part in the World’s Leading Energy Efficiency Competition: Shell Eco Marathon organized annually by the Shell group of companies. This STEM based international competition challenges students across the world to design, build and race highly fuel efficient vehicles on race tracks. There are a total 2 events that happen throughout the year, one is the Shell Eco-Marathon India Challenger event which is the national event and Shell Eco-Marathon Asia which is an international event. We participate in both the events. Link to competition:Marie: How do you use SOLIDWORKS in competition?Team Eta: The components we manufacture all year round, SOLIDWORKS, is the initial step that tests our designing skills and shapes our ideas and mechanisms into a part or an assembly which we can refurbish further and make a finished product. Being a fuel efficient team, the main idea behind being the most efficient on track, is to have the least weight, and SOLIDWORKS having a variety of facilities in its tools, makes our work easier and helps us to get a soft image of our desired components with its critical properties such as mass, inertia, etc.Marie: What is the next step of your journey?Team Eta: We look forward to designing lightweight and sturdy components that will help us improve more mileage and also implement some useful mechanisms for our upcoming new vehicles. We are also using SOLIDWORKS 2021-22, for designing our new vehicle body and some very useful mechanisms in the powertrain department.Marie: Where can others go to find out more about your team?Team Eta: We have a pretty strong social network, we have a lot of people supporting us over there! We surely want to welcome more people under our #madovermiles community, below are the links for our social networking sites,

Marie: Anything else you would like to tell the SOLIDWORKS community.Team Eta: We would like to tell the SolidWorks Community that one should keep on designing until the time he/she is satisfied with the optimum output. Designing helps to keep the mind fresh with new ideas! We want to thank SOLIDWORKS for their support in our past endeavors. We are currently using the SolidWorks 2021-22 and SolidWorks 3D Experience and it has been a great experience until now. The software is just the backbone of the team, a link between imagination and reality.Thank you Team Eta for sharing with the SOLIDWORKS Community and good luck in this year’s competitions.Be well. Marie
