Organ preservation encompasses hospitals, transport routes, flights and their delays, handoffs, and staffing constraints, all under time pressure.&nbsp;ScubaTx, a medical equipment manufacturing company founded in 2020 and headquartered in Manchester, UK, is developing a platform to preserve human organs under such conditions.



ScubaTx focuses on advanced temperature control and persufflation,&nbsp;an advanced organ preservation technique used in transplantation to keep donor organs viable longer. According to ScubaTx Mechanical Engineer Alex Cleaver, Sr., “ScubaTx is an organ preservation device; the key technology is persufflation.”







Persufflation delivers oxygenated gas through chilled organs during preservation. “We can cool organs down for transport and provide oxygen to those organs by persefflating gas through them,” adds Cleaver. The goal is to help organs remain viable longer so they can travel farther.



“With an organ transplant, many organs are available that can&#8217;t be used because they can&#8217;t reach a recipient in time,” explains ScubaTx Technical Director Martin Emms. “The ScubaTx product keeps that organ at a much ‘happier’ temperature. That organ can actually travel for longer, so it gives more people a chance of having an organ [transplant].”







Support for Modern Product Development



The ScubaTx team needed access to capable design tools without losing control of cash flow or delaying development. “The SOLIDWORKS® Startup Program&nbsp;was absolutely critical to us because, as a startup, cash flow and funding are always something that we&#8217;re cognizant of,” Cleaver emphasizes. “Having a really powerful piece of [product development] software is absolutely critical.”



ScubaTx used&nbsp;SOLIDWORKS Design&nbsp;as part of a broader workflow for designing, developing, reviewing, and preparing files for manufacture. Emms notes, “As technical director, I&#8217;m interested in the [design] review and release process.” The&nbsp;3DEXPERIENCE® platform&nbsp;provided a cloud-based environment with built-in data management and collaboration tools. ScubaTx established a structured review-and-release workflow to make sure every design is checked before it goes to manufacturing.







For collaboration, ScubaTx leveraged the&nbsp;3DEXPERIENCE platform to share design data without relying on its own infrastructure. “3DEXPERIENCE for us is absolutely critical for sharing files with our suppliers,” Cleaver enthuses. “The cloud-based system is really a robust way of storing the data and avoids us having to manage our own infrastructure.”







Building Confidence Before Prototypes



Because thermal performance is critical, simulation became part of the ScubaTx development process. “Thermal simulations have allowed us to quickly prototype ideas without spending lots of money on building a physical prototype,” Emms explains. Cleaver adds, “We have more confidence when we produce a prototype with Flow Simulation.”



ScubaTx also used SOLIDWORKS Visualize to support communication. For a pre-commercial medical device company, demonstrating progress is part of building understanding around a device that is still being developed. “SOLIDWORKS Visualize has been important for us to produce product renders,” Cleaver notes. “As a startup, we need to show our development progress and communicate that message to the market.” SOLIDWORKS Visualize helps build credibility before a finished physical prototype is available.







Engineering Toward Transplant Reality



ScubaTx is trying to expand a complex preservation concept toward practical use. For a company working in organ preservation, that discipline supports a larger objective: designing for the realities of transplant logistics rather than ideal conditions. “It feels fantastic to be creating a product that could eventually save lives and give more people a chance to get a transplant,” Emms enthuses. “It allows us to essentially do something that makes you glad to get up in the morning to see if you can make a difference.”

CocoTerra has developed the first fully-automated tabletop chocolate maker. The CocoTerra machine makes dark, milk, and white chocolate in one unified appliance. Users can easily customize and personalize their chocolate with different flavors and designs. We are fortunate to have CocoTerra as an integral part of the SOLIDWORKS for Startups program.









I sat down with founder,&nbsp;Nate Saal&nbsp;and lead hardware engineer, Chuck McCall, to find out more about their chocolate-making company, how they use SOLIDWORKS, and the next steps in business development.







With a background in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Nate wanted his customers to take the raw sustainable-sourced ingredients and build chocolate from the ground up.&nbsp;&nbsp;As one innovative home appliance, CocoTerra combines multiple steps in chocolate production, including heating and cooling, grinding and refining with a ball mill, and molding into a centrifugal chamber to produce a ring of chocolate.







Chuck McCall described the SOLIDWORKS assembly used in their latest product iteration.&nbsp;Controlling temperature through the multi-stage chocolate producing process is key.







Chuck learned SOLIDWORKS while a student at Stanford University and as the lead engineer for CocoTerra applied for&nbsp;SOLIDWORKS for Startups program.







As I talked with Nate, I realized that someone like me, who loves dark chocolate, baking and cooking, but has no experience in chocolate production, could actually control ingredients like sugar, nuts, and the coco nibs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Coco nibs from the cacao bean, cocoa butter, and sugar are the foundation ingredients of chocolate. These coco nibs are sustainablely sourced.







Another audience for CocoTerra is outside the home kitchen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hundreds of skilled chocolate artisans, makers, and chefs create custom chocolates with unique recipes and add-ins.&nbsp;&nbsp;







CocoTerra is also used by global chocolate brands and R&amp;D labs for rapid product development. Small batches can be made in 2 hours so multiple modifications and tastings can occur in 1 day – reducing the time to create new products.

Long before the students take to the track, they design, analyze, and then re-design/re-test their components and vehicles.I was fortunate to interview TEAM Eta, a Shell Eco Marathon team from Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU), in Mumbai, India.Team Eta – MAHIL – 2019 Prototype Vehicle, achieved 268.7 kmpl (kilometers/liter) on petrol.SOLIDWORKS helped get uniformity in the Aerodynamic design of the vehicle, resulting in extraordinary achievements.The name Mahil means one who progresses! Team Eta achieved multiple first place wins in Asia – earning them 1st in Asia ranking and 12th in global rankings in Shell Eco-Marathon.We are fortunate that Team Eta shared their designs with the SOLIDWORKS community.  I asked Team Eta to highlight some of their achievements.1) ROLLING FRICTION BASED SHAFT DRIVE – Using Extensive modelling features, the drivetrain team successfully designed a rolling friction based driveshaft system, which is more energy efficient than conventional sliding friction based gear train.2)  CONTINUOUS VARIABLE CHAIN TRANSMISSION:  SOLIDWORKS tools and a variety of features helped us bring out creativity and innovative ideas on the design platform efficiently. SOLIDWORKS makes our work easier with ease in creation of such complex objects in a short time periods.4)NACA DUCT AEROFOIL:  Implementing  ideas in SOLIDWORKS has always created great outcomes in designing. The NACA Duct is one of such design outcomes with many simulation tests in SOLIDWORKS Simulation.5)TWO SPEED GEAR TRAIN:  The motion analysis tool in SOLIDWORKS,  used for the motion study of the depicted gear train, produces a smooth and realistic output with simple and effortless editing6) DOG ENGAGER MECHANISM: Visualization, analysis and simulation of simple to complex systems is made easier and better with SOLIDWORKS. The system illustrated above for such outcome is a Dog engager mechanismMy interview would not be complete without asking Team Eta more about their team.Marie: Tell me something about your team, where are you from, how many members, school name, and your advisor.Team Eta: We are Team Eta, the official Super Mileage team of K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai India. We are a student team of 32 members who are passionate about creating a fuel-efficient prototype vehicle that covers great distances within a given amount of fuel. The guidance and inspiration that drives us, comes from our beloved Faculty Advisor Dr. Ajay Gangrade. Our team manager Mr. Yuvraj Dalvi and co-manager Mr. Aman Pandit have been the backbone of our team, guiding us through 2020-21 helping us achieve a great feat in the year 2020 and 2021. There are a total 2 events that happen throughout the year, one is the Shell Eco-Marathon India Challenger event which is the national event and Shell Eco-Marathon Asia which is an international event. We participate in both the events. Link to competition:Marie: How do you use SOLIDWORKS in competition?Team Eta: The components we manufacture all year round, SOLIDWORKS, is the initial step that tests our designing skills and shapes our ideas and mechanisms into a part or an assembly which we can refurbish further and make a finished product. Being a fuel efficient team, the main idea behind being the most efficient on track, is to have the least weight, and SOLIDWORKS having a variety of facilities in its tools, makes our work easier and helps us to get a soft image of our desired components with its critical properties such as mass, inertia, etc.Marie: What is the next step of your journey?Team Eta: We look forward to designing lightweight and sturdy components that will help us improve more mileage and also implement some useful mechanisms for our upcoming new vehicles. He was part of the SOLIDWORKS FIRST Robotics Competition Student team and now is an active member of the TEKYAZ | 3DEXPERIENCE Students Platform.Nurettin completed all TEKYAZ free on demand training classes. He attended 3DEXPERIENCE World and participated in the Student VIP access promotion to obtain the necessary SOLIDWORKS certification free exam codes.  One-by-one he completed each exam, passed, and achieved his CSWE.I was fortunate to interview Nurettin and to be able to share his journey with you.Marie: How old were you when you started to learn SOLIDWORKS?Nurettin: First I started to use and learn SOLIDWORKS at age of 15 (September 2018) in my school’s Design-Maker Club with my mentor Servet Temel.Marie: How were you introduced to SOLIDWORKS? Thru FIRST?  A teacher?Nurettin: On the first Wednesday of my high school days, I made my decision to choose the Design-Maker club and, with that decision, it all began.Marie: Have you used the 3DEXPERIENCE SWYM Student Community established by TEKYAZ?  If yes, how have you used this community?Nurettin: Yes, of course. I used this community and platform for having help, helping others, creating new content, getting my CSWA-MD, CSWA-AM and CSWP-MD exam passes, etc.Marie: Do you use any other 3DEXPERIENCE platform apps like xDesign or xShape?Nurettin: Yes, I used xDesign, 3DDrive, Collaborative Spaces, and SOLIDWORKS  add-ons for our 2021 FRC Challenges. After our 3DEXPERIENCE EDU Worldwide Challenge submission sponsorship approval, I used these apps and tried xShape for a short time.Marie: I understand you are involved in FIRST Robotics.  What do you do in FIRST?Nurettin: I feel great and do so many things in my first and last season. Before that, I was on the Robot Wars team of ENKA TECH. As the leader of the mechanics’ department, we attended the Game Design and Infinitive Recharge at Home Challenges. We designed a great game and made our presentations wonderfully.Marie: Now that you have achieved CSWE, a great accomplishment, what do you want to do next?Nurettin: Thanks for your good wishes first, after accomplishing my CSWE-MD aim I started to learn Solidworks Simulation (want to be an Expert at the Simulation too) and further developing my 3D Printer brand “LNS3D”.Marie: Anything else you want to tell our SOLIDWORKS community.Nurettin: For the young SOLIDWORKS  users and beginners, whenever you feel ready for the certifications don’t wait for it, start finding ways to getting exam vouchers and prove yourselves to the world. It’s just like a staircase; you first start with learning, after the first step of proving yourself with the CSWA exam, and so on. At the last step, at the glorious CSWE exam, you will shine with your true potential.What is next for Nurettin? This young entrepreneur wants to create a start-up to manufacture 3D Printers – he is already working on the designs.For TEKYAZ and the future of students in Turkey, Ilker concluded, “So it is a great story for us to believe the power of 3DEXPERIENCE platform and collaboration.       <![CDATA[ 3DEXPERIENCE World  is the best event to learn more about SOLIDWORKS, explore new technology, and get inspired by our community of designers, engineers, educators and students.For 17 years, I went to SOLIDWORKS World, as a customer, user group leader, partner, educator, and employee.  This is my first 3DEXPERIENCE World to learn more about SOLIDWORKS, more about cloud-based software applications (Apps), and have fun with our growing community.  With my teammates, we just call it “World”.Learning.  At World, there are more SOLIDWORKS breakout sessions than last year. These sessions include the latest SOLIDWORKS enhancements, best practices to improve your skills, and prepare for a SOLIDWORKS Certification exam (418K Certified SOLIDWORKS Users).  I remember the Sketch Tips and Tricks session from my first user group meeting.  I can’t wait to learn more about the 2020 features.SOLIDWORKS 2020 runs on your Windows desktop. Model mania will challenge the best designers at World using SOLIDWORKS in lightning speed.  Over 20 years, SOLIDWORKS features have changed allowing engineers to get their work done faster.   As technology changes, additional functionality related to SOLIDWORKS users must expand and enhance the product design process.  That is where the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and advancement in manufacturing technology come in.At world, there are sessions on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and product development Apps related to SOLIDWORKS.  My 2020 resolution is to learn more about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.  So this past month, I reviewed the World event program and want to share with you what I have learned – before you go to Nashville, TN, USA, February 9-12, 2020.  If you cannot get to Nashville, you can catch live streaming at Live.SolidWorks.com.Here are some helpful key definitions.3DEXPERIENCE World 2020 is an event for designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, researchers, educators, and students to learn, innovate, and celebrate together.  Building on the legacy of SOLIDWORKS World, it’s the source for new innovation that centers around SOLIDWORKS and its partners.  It’s also about the software applications, relevant to the SOLIDWORKS user, with Dassault Systèmes technologies.3DEXPERIENCE platform is a business technology platform developed by Dassault Systèmes.  The platform is both a cloud-based innovation platform and a transaction platform.3DEXPERIENCE Apps are software applications based on Dassault Systèmes technologies.  Our software brands CATIA, DELMIA, SOLIDWORKS, SIMULIA, ENOVIA, NETVIBES and EXALEAD are part of the Dassault Systèmes portfolio.3DEXPERIENCE WORKS portfolio is a cloud-based collaborative, product development environment, that unites an entire organization from design and manufacturing to service and marketing.   Apps come from SOLIDWORKS, DELMIAWorks, SIMULIAWorks, ENOVIAWorks and more.3DEXPERIENCE Roles are a collection of related software Apps.  My favorite Apps are xDesign and xShape. You can also learn more about new Apps at MySolidWorks.com Training.Inspiration. What makes the World experience so uplifting is the human aspect of what gathers us together as engineers and designers.  These inspirational stories provide lasting memories for years to come.World features Dean Kamen, inventor, entrepreneur, STEM advocate, and founder of FIRST and FIRST Global, my hero.  There are more inspirational speakers outlined here.In the Playground Edu area, you can speak with student teams from, Tennessee Tech FSAE and Baja SAE, Louisiana Tech Shell Eco-marathon, University of Tennessee FSAE, and Dripping Spring HS (Texas) IEEE RC 4×4.You can also talk with researchers from Vanderbilt University developing a submarine living space in real time on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with other students from India and France.Community. Our community is an inspiration at World!  Stop by the Playground 3DEXPERIENCE for Good area to see Magic Wheelchair, LN4 prosthetic hands, and Danielle Boyer, Every Kids Gets a Robot.And don’t forget this is a Users Group meeting.  There are special meetings with SOLIDWORKS User Group leaders on Wednesday morning.Start-ups. Eight start-ups pitch for a chance at World.  See the preliminaries on Monday night and the finals Wednesday at General Session,  You can vote  for your favorite too.Fun.       <![CDATA[ Hover Bike Entry xChallenge by Kunal Jain &#038; FRC 5422 Stormgears using 3DEXPERIENCE Platform &#038;  SOLIDWORKS xDesign app.My 2020 New Year’s Resolution is to learn how the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud-based business platform will help educators, students, and researchers share new ideas, collaborate on projects, and connect the product development process from design, through manufacturing to delivery.Through a series of 2020 blog posts, I will introduce new innovations in Dassault Systemes technology, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, and the connection to SOLIDWORKS, as all are relevant in the classroom, outside of the classroom, and in the research laboratory.The 3DEXPERIENCE platform will be available to educational institutions later this year.  My colleague John put together this short story video on how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is used for a senior design project.You can read more about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform here.My Background. Teaching SOLIDWORKS at Mass Bay Community College in 1998 changed my life, the lives of my students, and their future employers.  I taught Engineering Design, Engineering Mechanics, Physics and Calculus with a focus on projects in easy to use PC-based 3D CAD software.  Starting a local SOLIDWORKS Users Group allowed my students to receive great jobs as companies adapted SOLIDWORKS. Google was founded in 1998.I joined the SOLIDWORKS Education Team in 2005.  We had 200,000 students using SOLIDWORKS.  With the help of an amazing Early Engagement team, 15 years later we have over 10 million students that have learned SOLIDWORKS, 1000’s of start-ups, and over 400,000 Certified Users. Facebook was founded in 2004.Platforms. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon have developed both innovation and transaction platforms.  Examples of innovation platforms are: Google Android, Apple IOS, Amazon AWS (Amazon Web services), IBM Watson, Microsoft Azure to name a few.  Examples of transaction platforms are: Google Play, Uber, Amazon Marketplace, Apple App store, Twitter, LinkedIn, Trip Advisor, etc.  My engineering interns and all students are very familiar with the use of platforms.Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE is a hybrid business cloud-based platform that is both an innovation and transaction platform.  As our CEO Bernard Charles stated, “DS provides business &#038; people with 3DEXPERIENCE universes to imagine sustainable innovation capable of harmonizing produce, nature and life.” As a science and engineering software company, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is providing interconnected tools across multiple technologies.Boeing, P&#038;G, and Toyota  are presently using this platform along with midsize, smaller, and startup businesses.  As the global workforce of the future, students, with hours of experience using Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple platforms will get jobs at companies that use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Students are integral part of the 3DEXPERIENCE universe.SOLIDWORKS VAR, CADMES introduces FRCTeam Rembrandts and FTC Netherlands teams to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with SOLIDWORKS xDesign, making the connection to local industry.The 3DEXPERIENCE platform allows students to collaborate in real time, track tasks, and design in 3D. There is also a direct connection to SOLIDWORKS software.Cloud-based. From my Apple iPhone or any device, through a web browser, I can access the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Data is shared securely and managed through the platform.  I belong to 3DSymn 3DS SOLIDWORKS community at work.  I can post ideas, review models, and comment anywhere I travel,  at anytime.Applications (apps). As in all platforms (like your smart phone), there are software applications called, “apps.”Major Apps include:
Business Innovation for file management and administration
Industry Innovation for task scheduling
3D Creator for mechanical parts and assemblies
3D Sculptor for organic shapes
MySolidWorks. My first step is to learn more about these apps.  Luckily, there is a series of Learning Paths on My SolidWorks developed by our Documentation Team.  To begin, I’ll start with Business Innovation and Industry Innovation learning paths.Business Innovation, the foundation of 3DEXPERIENCE platform, digitally connects a community of students and educators across the product development process.Industry Innovation provides engineering teams an essential set of apps for real-time, secure and structured collaboration on product content.Upcoming Innovations.  This year, I will share with you a summary of the Business innovation and Industry Innovation apps and how they are used throughout the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.   More apps will follow.  3D Sculptor app is a 3D subdivision modeling application that enables industrial designers, engineers, and artists to create stylized ergonomically or organically shaped models. 3D Creator app enables designers and engineers to create, review, and evaluate 3D designs.  Both apps are connected through the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.2020 is going to be an exciting year.  Happy New Year!       <![CDATA[ We are proud to announce the winners of the first SOLIDWORKS xDesign Challenge for India!1600+ students and 249 teams had 41 days to work on their Futuristic Public Transport designs. The submissions we received were amazing!The response from students was overwhelming from the activities posted in SWYM community, Creating Private Collaborative Space &#038; Communities, Selfie Challenge, and most favorite xDesign Model Mania.  All communication including Q&#038;A, feedback, polls and queries were done through 3DExpereince Platform 3DSWYM community. The team of 12 judges, evaluated all the submissions based on design criteria provided to students. After brainstorming, 15 entries were shortlisted out of 72 submitted. It was difficult to decide the top five prize winners, hence a panel of judges comprising of Dassault Systemes R&#038;D lab India executives, spent hours deliberating over the team’s submissions, and in the end the judges made their decision.And the winners of the first SOLIDWORKS xDesign Challenge for India and ₹2.00 lac award winners are…

      <![CDATA[ Alex Van Overbeeke-Costello is an intern in the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab and a passionate member of the UMass Lowell Formula SAE team. Recently, she joined her team in Barrie, Ontario  to represent SOLIDWORKS and compete in Formula North, where 45 teams from across North America showcased their small, formula-style vehicles. All Formula SAE vehicles are  conceived, designed, fabricated, and developed by students. Learn about Day 1 here.The second day of competition is mainly the static events: design, business presentation, and cost presentation. However, if you are a newer less mature team, you also are extremely focused on passing through tech finally. During Tech, The tallest driver is put into the race car and has to go through scales. Our car weighed in at a whopping 757 lbs with driver. One goal we have is to reduce this for next year. In this photo you can see Austin, one of our seniors. He was a huge part in the design and manufacturing of the braking system.Part of competition is the cost report and presentation. Since our car is so low budget, we actually came in 3rd in cost! This static event is mainly scored on the completion and detail of a cost report which is done months prior, as well as the actual price of the vehicle. Our car was the least expensive at competition. In fact, our car was about 9.5k which was about 2k less than the next cheapest car.Probably the most stressful part of competition is design. It is worth the most amount of points. It also really puts everyone on the spot. I represented the chassis/aero team. I explained as much as I could. Mostly what I explained, was that this car was designed several years ago by now graduated students. I explained that we were really looking to learn as much as possible with this car so that it can be better for the next competition. My judge was extremely professional and helpful. He told me every question he would ask so that next year I can come back and answer every one. He told me he likes the creativity behind some of the budgeting choices that we made but that we needed to clean and tighten everything up. I am extremely excited to show the judges how much we improved at competition next year.After having passed the visual inspection, we were finally permitted to put fuel in the vehicle. This was an emotional moment for everyone. This was the moment that pushed us farther than we had previously gone last year. We were finally allowed to drive the car. This allowed us to go on to the next step, noise, tilt, and brakes.One of the scariest parts of technical inspection is the tilt test. Here you can see our driver, Austin, being lifted up to 45* to test for roll. The car needed to go up to 60* in order to pass. This was quite scary but luckily we passed! After tilt came noise. If your car can get up to a certain rev and still stay under 110dB, you pass. We passed this too!Discover what happened next at Formula North and stay tuned for Day 3! ]]>
