DraftSight Turns 15!







Fifteen years ago, DraftSight was introduced to deliver powerful 2D CAD with a familiar drafting environment, flexible licensing options, and a competitive price. Since then, it has become a trusted daily tool used across multiple stages of design and production.



Shared and Revised Across Teams



In most projects, drawings are shared among teams, revised multiple times, and must remain accurate as requirements evolve and deadlines shift. DraftSight includes tools for managing those updates. From First Release to Today



DraftSight was introduced in 2011 to support professional 2D drafting and is fully compatible with DWG files. Early adoption was driven by its familiar interface, strong performance, and the ability to work with existing files without conversions.



As usage increased, the software expanded to support more demanding environments.&nbsp;Automation through LISP&nbsp;and APIs, improved handling of large drawings, and support for industry standards allowed DraftSight to move beyond basic drafting into production use across teams and organizations.

Why 2D Drawings Continue to Be Used



2D drawings are still the standard format for review, approval, and production. They are the files that are checked, shared, and signed off on before work progresses. In many cases, they are what teams depend on when a design needs to be interpreted, built, or verified. While 3D tools are often used earlier in the process, 2D drawings remain the reference for final details.

Many CAD professionals have experienced some version of this moment. You receive a BIM model from an architect or consultant. Then comes the real work. You need labeled, scaled, and readable floor plans that can be reviewed, marked up, or issued as PDFs.



For many drafters, this is where friction creeps in. Translating a BIM model into accurate 2D drawings requires a series of workarounds, including additional steps, tools, and cleanup.

The workflow begins by bringing the BIM model directly into DraftSight. That means you can skip the redrawing or rebuilding of geometry.







Once imported, the model behaves as expected for 2D drafting. Building levels are clearly defined. Elements are organized. You are working with a model that already understands how the building is organized. That clarity matters. It means your time goes into producing drawings, not into figuring out how to prepare the file before you can begin.



Turning 3D Information Into 2D Plans



From there, floor plans are created by selecting the appropriate level and generating a 2D view. The result is real linework that behaves like native geometry.

Details That Make a Plan Usable



Once the plan is in place, room names, numbers, and other labels can be added with awareness of the BIM data they represent.       <![CDATA[ When DraftSight Needs a Fresh Start: How to Reset to Default SettingsEvery CAD team has been there.A workstation starts behaving strangely. Menus look different from what was expected. Commands do not respond the way they should. Maybe a power user customized everything before leaving the company, or a third-party add-in changed more than intended. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: DraftSight no longer feels like DraftSight.The good news is that getting back to a clean, factory-style setup does not require reinstalling the software. In most cases, a simple reset of user settings is all it takes.Why Reset to Default Settings?DraftSight stores user preferences, profiles, and customizations locally. Over time, those files can become cluttered or corrupted, especially in shared environments or after multiple configuration changes. Resetting the settings tells DraftSight to rebuild everything from scratch using its default configuration.Your existing customizations are not deleted. They are simply set aside, providing a safe fallback if you want to recover specific settings later.Before You BeginVery important: Make sure DraftSight is completely closed. The application needs to regenerate its settings the next time it starts, and that cannot happen if it is still running in the background.Resetting DraftSight on Windows®Open File Explorer.Navigate to:C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingIf you do not see the AppData folder, enable hidden items from the View menu in File Explorer.Locate the DraftSight folder.Right-click the folder and rename it something like DraftSight_OLD.Restart DraftSight.When DraftSight launches, it automatically creates a new DraftSight folder with default settings. You will now see two folders in the Roaming directory: the new one and the renamed backup.Is Your Profile the Problem?Sometimes the issue is not DraftSight itself, but the user profile behind it. Profile problems tend to show up as layout changes, missing toolbars, shortcuts that no longer work, or settings that refuse to stick. The software opens, but it does not behave consistently.If DraftSight works correctly for other users or works normally on another workstation using the same license, that is a strong sign the issue is tied to a local user profile.In those cases, resetting just the profile folder is a good first step before resetting all user settings. In this case:Close DraftSight.Navigate to:C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingDraftSightRight-click the Profiles folder and rename it Profiles-OLD.Restart DraftSight and check whether the issue is resolved.If problems continue, renaming the main DraftSight folder as described earlier usually solves them.Resetting DraftSight on macOSClose DraftSight.Navigate to:/Users/[USERNAME]/Library/Preferences/Rename the DraftSight folder to DraftSight_OLD.Restart DraftSight.Just as on Windows, DraftSight automatically rebuilds its default settings.When a Registry Reset Is Necessary (Windows Only)In some cases, resetting folders alone is not enough. DraftSight relies heavily on the Windows Registry to store user profiles, customized settings, installation paths, and licensing data. When those registry entries become corrupted, outdated, or misconfigured, DraftSight may continue to show errors even after a standard reset or reinstall. This is why removing specific DraftSight registry keys is sometimes needed to fully refresh the application.Why Deleting DraftSight Registry Keys HelpsRemoving corrupted settings: Unexpected shutdowns, power outages, or software conflicts can damage registry entries over time. When those entries load at startup, DraftSight may behave unpredictably. Deleting them forces the application to rebuild clean default values the next time it launches.Fixing failed installations or updates: If a previous installation or update failed, leftover registry keys can block future installations or cause version conflicts. Removing these entries ensures the system returns to a true clean state.Resetting broken customizations: User interface issues such as missing ribbons, incorrect toolbars, or shortcuts that refuse to save are often tied to registry values. Removing the user-specific registry path HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareDassault SystemesDraftSight is often faster and more effective than repairing the software.Resolving licensing or activation problems: License and activation data is also stored in the registry. In some cases, removing DraftSight entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareDassault Systemes can help resolve activation issues that persist after reinstalling.Correcting file association problems: If double-clicking a DWG file opens the wrong application or the wrong version of DraftSight, outdated registry entries related to file associations may be the cause. Cleaning these entries allows Windows to rebuild the correct associations.Important Safety NoteEditing the Windows Registry carries risk if done incorrectly. Take these steps before making any changes:
Open Registry Editor
Select File > Export
Save a backup of the specific keys you plan to modify, or export the entire registry
This backup allows you to restore the system if something goes wrong. Registry cleanup should be considered an advanced troubleshooting step. When used carefully, it can resolve problems that folder resets and reinstalls cannot.A Clean StartOnce DraftSight restarts, you are working with a clean configuration. If everything behaves as expected, you can continue working. If you need to recover specific settings, you can copy individual files from the renamed folder into the new one.Resetting DraftSight to default settings is a quick fix, but it solves a wide range of problems.       <![CDATA[ My longtime colleague and friend, Eric Leafquist is retiring from Dassault Systèmes. Although most know Eric as the “Electrical Guy” Senior Product Manager for SOLIDWORKS, Eric was also the product manager for SOLIDWORKS EDU since the beginning. In 2005, I met Eric when I stated at SOLIDWORKS and never realized how much my life and the lives of those involved in engineering education would change that primarily involved 2D drawing tools or drafting boards.Eric worked with R&#038;D, QA, the EDU Sales team and me to take the SOLIDWORKS commercial products and transform them into the SOLIDWORKS Education Edition, the SOLIDWORKS Student Edition, the SOLIDWORKS Student Design Kit (SDK), and the SOLIDWORKS Engineering Kit (SEK). First was CD’s then DVD’s and finally download for students. There was SOLIDWORKS CAD and COSMOS (SOLIDWORKS Simulation) to start. Then Eric managed to incorporate almost everything SOLIDWORKS sold commercially including SOLIDWORKS Premium, SOLIDWORKS Simulation Premium, SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation, SOLIDWORKS Sustainability, SOLIDWORKS Electrical , SOLIDWORKS Composer, and Photorealistic rendering.What really transformed engineering education was Eric working SOLIDWORKS R&#038;D, schools’ IT Managers and individual educators to make our software easy to install and duplicate amongst huge networks. The network installation procedure made it possible for schools to install in a classroom, a campus or multi-campus environment. Eric made hundreds of visits to customers to keep improving our software and installation. With his pulse on commercial SOLIDWORKS users, he knew the SOLIDWORKS job skills students would need when they graduated.Eric also transformed our company with his strength and constant support of his daughter, Erica. Along with his wife, Kathy, The Erica Leafquist Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute focuses on helping fund research into new treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.).As a veteran bike rider of the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) on Team Dassault, Eric has raised funds for cancer research and motivated hundreds of employees, VARs and customers to participate – becoming the leading charity athletic fundraising event in the USA.Eric, I know every time I look out my window and see a beautiful sailboat going by, I will be thinking of you! 1. Updating Legacy Cosmetic Threads for Reliable Drawings and Models–  Nikhil BHIRUD As designs evolve across software versions, maintaining consistent thread callouts and visibility of cosmetic threads in model or drawings is essential for both manufacturing accuracy and model reliability.
Over time, even well-established models can begin to show discrepancies threads that disappear in model, misplaced threads in drawings, or callouts that lose formatting. These small irregularities often stem from data created using earlier versions of SOLIDWORKS.That’s where this feature comes in: Updating Legacy Cosmetic Threads the simplest way to ensure threaded features behave predictably and display correctly across both models and drawings.Understanding the Problem:Many ongoing projects still include models built years ago using earlier cosmetic thread definitions. These legacy threads might look fine initially but can introduce subtle issues such as:
Missing or inconsistent threads
Threads that fail to appear in model or drawings
Mismatched or dangling annotations after rebuilds
Modern versions of SOLIDWORKS manage cosmetic threads with enhanced geometry references, smarter callout links, and improved visualization control. By updating older data, you bring these improvements to existing parts eliminating inconsistencies and restoring full reliability across assemblies and drawings.How to Update Legacy Cosmetic Threads:The update process is simple and typically takes only a few moments per file:
Open the part, assembly, or drawing that contains cosmetic threads.
Go to Tools → Options → System Options → General.
Enable the setting: Allow cosmetic threads for upgrade.  This enables SOLIDWORKS to automatically detect and upgrade legacy cosmetic threads when present.





In the FeatureManager Design Tree, right-click the top-level part or assembly.
Choose Upgrade Cosmetic Thread Features: This command appears only when legacy cosmetic threads are detected in the open document.





 Wait for the operation to complete, then save the file.
Important: Once saved, the file cannot revert to the old data structure. After updating, open any associated drawings or assemblies and perform a Rebuild so that thread callouts and annotations refresh correctly.What Improves After the Update:When legacy cosmetic threads are upgraded, SOLIDWORKS regenerates them using the modern internal structure. You’ll notice several improvements:

How to Configure a SOLIDWORKS SolidNetwork License Manager Options File to Manage License Usage– Akhil C Managing SOLIDWORKS network licenses efficiently helps ensure fair access and optimal use of resources. The SolidNetwork License Manager Options File allows administrators to define clear rules for license allocation.This way, user or UserGroups can be allowed/denied a specific set of licenses. Licenses can also a reserved for a user/usergroup.  For more detailed information, review the FlexNet Publisher Administration Guide > Section ’13. Managing the Options File’What is  Options File?The Options file (sw_d.opt) works with FlexNet technology to control who can access licenses, how many can be used,  borrowing behavior, and inactivity timeouts.The options file enables the license administrator to control various operating parameters within the constraints of the license model. Users are identified by their user name, host name, display, IP address, or PROJECT (which is set with the LM_PROJECT environment variable).Creating the Options File:
Open SolidNetwork License Manager on the server.
Go to Server Administration > Modify.





Choose Activate/Reactivate licenses.





Enable Options File and click Edit.





Save the sw_d.opt file after adding rules.
Applying Changes:Save the file and complete reactivation or reread the file from Server Administration.Changing an Existing Options FileBased on the requirements, administrators can modify the options file and add/remove require keywords anytime they want.  Here are the two method which can be used to edit the Options File.Method 1: Using the SolidNetwork License Manager
Open the SolidNetwork License Manager on the license server.
Navigate to Server Administration and click Modify.
Select Activate/Reactivate your product license(s).
Click Edit to open the existing Options file.
Make the required changes and save the file.
Continue or cancel the reactivation process.

In either case, the License Manager service will restart and load the updated Options file.


Method 2: Editing the File Manually
Open the opt file using Notepad or another text editor.
Make the necessary changes and save the file.
Open the SolidNetwork License Manager.
Go to the Server Administration
Click Reread to refresh the Options file.

This applies the changes immediately without restarting the service or resetting license logs.







Note: After the OptionsFiles is modified, the license has to be Reread [SNL Manager Server > License Information > ‘Reread’]. Just modifying the Options Files, won’t implement the changes made. To confirm if the changes made in OptionsFile are implemented, open the LMGRD Log [Server Administration > License Server > View Log], and check if the newly added keyword appears in this section (see image below).Happy Customization……..!!!!
