This is pretty cool. I notice, though, that when you change from physical simulation to COSMOSMotion, it doesn't work correctly. The ball starts orbiting the bowl, through the walls of the bowl. What's the difference between the 2 simulations, and could COSMOSMotion be made to work with this model? I'm having nightmare issues trying to get COSMOSMotion to work the way I'd like...

I agree that Physical behavior is determined by the mates

Hi, are there any instructions on how to set up the physical simulations for the gravity bowl. I would like to show it to my high school students but don't know how to set it up.

    Regards,

To create the ball, first create a 180 degree arc. Revolve the arc around a centerline. Click yes to the question - close the sketch.

To create the bowl, sketch a 180 arc with the opening at the top. Use the Revolve feature - but this time do not close the sketch. Say NO. Then the Revolve Thin option will occur. Put in a thickness for your bowl.

You will now have 2 parts a ball and a bowl.

Create an assembly. First insert the bowl. Then insert the ball. Insert a Coincident mate between the front plane of the bowl and the ball. Insert a tangent mate between the outside of the ball and the inside of the bowl

Position the ball above the bowl. Click the Motion Study 1 tab at the bottom of the assembly graphics windwow. Turn View, TEmporary Axis on. Click on the ball and insert a Gravity simulation tool on the ball. Direction should be downward. Play the simulation.

Make certain you create a mate between the planes of the ball and the bowl to control more the behavior. Marie

Hi, I'm having trouble getting a coincident mate between the front plane of the bowl and the ball. I only have the ability to put in a tangent mate. What am I doing wrong? Any advice?

HELP!!!!!!!! I am having a problem in that the ball rolls around the outside of the bowl. I have a tangent mate between the ball and the INSIDE of the BOWL. AND I have a coincident mate between the front plane of the bowl and the front plane of the ball. PLEASE HELP. I'm using this with my high school students and I want to get it to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks, Kimberly Coie

Also, I am using the IntelliMotion builder to simulate this. Could that be part of the problem.

    Thanks,
    Kim

    Hello,

My name is Joseph and I am an instructor at Humber College in Toronto. We created this animation last year and placed it in YouTube. Note that for this to work properly you need to have SolidWorks 2008 or a newer version. If you are having problems with mates you can remove the mates and then place the ball a few inches above the bowl (with no mates). Then add gravity and contacts between the ball and the bowl. Run a physical simulation for say 10 seconds or more and then voila it should work. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Marie for using this example in your blog. We enjoyed working with it, since it teaches concepts on gravity and friction.

Thanks for the further information in reply to Kim's comment. I've been having a few problems setting up physical simulations.

Also, should the movie work in most media software? I'm just getting a black screen at the moment.

this post is about what i'm looking for but if you could provide me detail how to set up the gravity study in solidworks. I'm using solidworks 2009 version.

    thanks,

The students consider that it’s essential to know about Robotics. To buy an essay at the writing services about Robotics, because it is really interesting text.

I think that the student design kit is now SolidWorks 2009 version so this should be available. Check the Sketch Options for "Enable on screen numeric input on entity creation.
