Electric Vehicle Manufacturer Races to Market with SOLIDWORKS

While the media buzz proclaiming the imminent death of the internal combustion engine might be premature at this point, there is an end in sight. While the end of gas-powered cars won’t happen in the near term, many studies indicate that fossil fuels, which have their origins somewhere between 541 and 66 million years ago, will be completed depleted in the next 55 years.

As a result of this rather daunting reality, auto manufacturers are eyeing the future and busy developing cars that rely on more sustainable energy sources. One of those companies is Rimac Automobili, a global producer of electric vehicles, drive trains and battery systems. The company is the end result of founder Mate Rimac’s efforts to convert his own BMW into a racing-caliber electric vehicle.

His effort eventually resulted in the Rimac Automobili e-M3, which was used as a test mule for the development of battery technologies, battery management systems, and propulsion drives that are now part of the Rimac Concept One, the world’s first electric hyper car.

The development team behind these efforts is made up of designers and engineers working out of a facility in Zagreb in Croatia. In 2011, the team began using SOLIDWORKS 3D design and analysis tools to overcome the technical challenges, accelerate its development efforts and grab market share in the burgeoning electric automobile and bike markets.

Since implementing SOLIDWORKS, the company has reduced its development time by 70 percent, optimized chassis components for strength and weight, and eliminated the need for prototyping.
