Flying High with Martin Aircraft

What do Buzz Lightyear, Boba Fett and The Rocketeer all have in common? All three are fictional characters that sport jetpacks and turn into high-flying stars. The characters also helped us dream of a day when mankind can fly without the confines of an airplane or helicopter –- a dream that is now a reality thanks to the Martin Jetpack.

Martin Aircraft, a SolidWorks customer, has designed the Martin Jetpack, the world’s first, practical jetpack to be used in military, search and rescue, and first responder markets, as well as for recreational purposes. Just like the well-known sci-fi characters, the average Joe now has the opportunity to take a safe, controllable, single-person flight, high up in the sky…. and it look good doing it. With PhotoView 360 rendering and SolidWorks eDrawings communications tools, Martin Aircraft is able to show cool-looking renderings of the jetpack design, as well as detailed engineering views of how it operates. Martin Aircraft is making it possible for the masses to fly with a jetpack, but jetpack travel is not necessarily new. If you are a football fan, you are probably aware that the Super Bowl has a long history of using jetpacks – from Super Bowl I in 1967 to Super Bowl XIX in 1985. The jetpacks were called “rocket belts” back in the day, but the concept remains the same – and it continues to generate intrigue and excitement. Will the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans feature a jetpack? We’ll have to wait until next February to find out!

Since the rocket belts morphed into the jetpacks we know today, who knows what's next in the jetpack evolution. If you’ve seen the summer blockbuster, The Avengers, or any Ironman movie, it may be similar to what Ironman has to work with. Jetpack boots help Tony Stark shoot through the air to fight crime. From belts to boots, jet travel is certainly keeping things interesting!
